Work in progress

I hear the horn beep outside and know that it must be the Uber
driver. I peek out of the bay window in the living room and
see the car out front with Uber on the roof. I walk over to
Brandi who is now fast asleep in her perch sleeping
peacefully. I lean over and tell her goodbye and kiss her
furry head I get a half purr half meow back in response, so I
say, “I love you too and will see you tonight”. I grab my
things and run out the door.
It is an odd ride to work with the Uber driver, I try to make
conversation but just feel odd being in someone else's car
with a stranger. I think what makes it odd is I have never
taken a taxi cab or even ridden on any sort of public
transportation. So many things are going through my head, I
watch too many criminal investigations shows I guess.
Thankfully though, I make it to work safely and the Uber
driver did not turn out to be a serial murderer or rapist or
any of the other characters that were running through my head
on the drive. As I exit his car, I say “I am going to be
leaving here early today so I can get a rental car, will you
be the driver to pick me up again”? He just looks at me and
shrugs and says, "don’t know". I smile and say “ok thank you
again and I hope you have a good day” as he begins pulling
away even before I am done talking to him. Well then that was
rude. Oh well I'm here in one piece he did his job, so I
guess he can be on his way.
I walk into work and Janet and Alexis are already there, they
look at me and have a bewildered look on their faces. Janet
is the one to ask, “did you get dropped off by an Uber
driver”? I smile and say “yes, it was an interesting ride
home last night”. Like a lightning bolt Alexis is out of her
seat and over by Janet's cubicle. I swear that her chair in
her office must be spinning she got up so fast. In unison
they ask, “what happened”? I say well “I have to punch in,
but I will give you the barebones story, I was in a car
accident”. They both gasp and look me over with mouths
gapping, “are you ok”? “Well I'm here aren’t I, and I am
obviously in one piece and have all my limbs” I am giggling in

response. “I am fine, just really sore today but the hot
shower and Tylenol and I guess just moving in general has
loosened me up a little bit. It really wasn't bad for the
Warren and I we both walked away, but for my car it was a lot
worse. I will explain in more detail later, right now I have
to punch in”. As I walk down the corridor I yell back to
Alexis to let her know I must leave early today to get
somethings taken care of and to pick up a rental car. She
yells back to me, “of course not a problem we will handle
things here at the office”. I am sure you will I think in my
head as I punch in.
Usually when I come back after a vacation or a day off Jack,
ass as we call him, never covers for me. Jack will never lift
a finger to help his coworkers, oh he makes it seem like he is
more than happy to, but he doesn’t. He is one of those
workers that kisses up to all the big bosses and gets away
with murder. One of the employees that is ok with making
themselves look busy and look like they are doing their job.
Oh, and don’t forget likes to correct everyone else when they
make mistakes, and pretend he knows everything and never makes
a mistake. No dude trust me you do not know everything it is
just that others are just not an ass like you and they fix
your mistakes without throwing it in your fucking face. Even
though trust me, we would love to through something at your
face at times.
I get to my desk and do my thing. I pull out my insurance
policy that I was extra careful to grab and bring with me.
This will be the first and hopefully last time I must call
them to report an accident. To my surprise when my insurance
rep answers and I tell her it is me she already has
information. Apparently, Mr. Davenport's insurance company
has already contacted them. Not sure when that happened
considering at the time of the accident they were closed, and
they just opened this morning about 15 minutes ago.
I ask, “is there anything that is needed from me”? She says,
“if you can tell me your version of what happened that would
be the only thing that I would really need at this time”. So,
I go through and tell her my version of what happened, and she

states that it is the same version she has that was received
by Warren’s insurance company.
She continues as she reassures me there will be nothing going
under my insurance that Mr. Davenport's insurance will handle
everything because he was the responsible party. I say, “I
kind of figured that, but I do have a question in regard to
renting a car until I find out the outcome of my vehicle’s
condition”. She replies, “Oh, of course that would have been
helpful for me to inform you on that situation. You can pick
up a rental car at the nearest rental car location and Mr.
Davenport's insurance will cover in full the cost to rent a
compact car, for the length of time that your car is in for
repairs”. “Okay I am relieved to hear that. I will be leaving
work early today and find out what is the closest rental car
place to work and pick one up today”. She asks if there is
anything else, I laugh and say, “not that I am aware of”. She
assures me that everything is in the works and that they will
call me if any questions or concerns arise. We disconnect our
call, as I think well now Mr. Davenport you are one man that
seems to have all his ducks in a row and his shit together,
thank goodness for that.
I leave work at noon, and I call again for an Uber and they
tell me it will be there in about 30 minutes to pick me up.
It turns out to only be 20 minutes if that, guess that is a
good thing they are within the timeframe window. Wonder if
they do what the pizza companies do, 30 minutes or less or
your ride is free. I doubt that but of course one of those
random unimportant thoughts generates itself into my mind
typical Sophie fashion.
I get in and it is not the same person I had this morning,
this is a young girl maybe college age and is very pleasant
and chipper. Of course, only I would be asking the poor thing
a million and one questions. She will probably be extremely
happy when we arrive at the car rental place to get rid of me.
I just can't believe a semi attractive young girl isn't
terrified of picking up the wrong, what would you call an Uber
user, an Uberer. That thought would be in my mind with every
time I would go out to pick up a new Uberer. But I have

learned that my mind and thoughts are not those of the normal
everyday 24-year-old.
