A box changed my fate

The story begins in a dimly lit hospital hallway, where the sound of footsteps echoes through the empty corridor. Each step is deliberate, the rhythmic shound shoes striking the cold, hard floor, reverberating off the sterile walls. The air is thick with anticipation, and the silence is almost suffocating.

Suddenly, the quiet is shattered by the cry of a newborn baby, a sharp, desperate sound that slices through the tension like a knife. The world shifts, seen now through the blurred vision of the infant. Everything is a swirl of indistinct shapes and muted colors, as if the newborn is struggling to make sense of its surroundings.
A soothing breeze sweeps through the room, causing a small bell toy hanging above the baby’s crib to chime softly. The sound is gentle, almost comforting. But then, another bell rings—a more eerie, unsettling sound. As soon as it echoes through the room, the baby’s crying abruptly stops, leaving a chilling silence in its wake.

In that stillness, a woman's scream suddenly pierces the air, filled with terror and desperation.

Ryuk jerks awake in his bed, gasping for breath, his heart pounding. He sits up, shaking, as if the echoes of that scream are still ringing in his ears. "Not again," he whispers to himself, his voice trembling. "The same bad dream… every week…”
The sudden jarring sound of the alarm clock jolted Ryuk awake, sending a shiver down his spine. Startled, he quickly reached out and silenced the alarm, his hand trembling slightly. With a deep breath, he swung his legs over the side of the bed and pulled open the curtains. The morning light flooded the room, signaling the start of another day.

He got ready for school, slipping on his uniform with practiced ease, and left the house. As he stepped out the door, his father called after him, reminding him to be careful.

At school, Ryuk sat alone at his desk, unwrapping his lunch. Just as he was about to take a bite, a boy named Jing snatched it from his hands. "Drink some water instead," Jing sneered, shoving Ryuk aside.

After lunch, Ryuk headed to the washroom, hoping for a moment of solitude. But as he entered, a group of boys surrounded him, their eyes gleaming with malice. They started to push and punch him, trying to assert their dominance. Just as Ryuk thought he couldn't take it anymore, the PT teacher barged in, scolding the boys and chasing them away. The teacher glanced at Ryuk with a look of pity, making him feel even smaller.
Ryuk slunk back to the classroom and slumped into his seat, Ryuk sat by the window, the classroom’s noise fading into the background as he lost himself in thought. His gaze drifted out to the schoolyard, but his mind wandered far beyond the confines of the mundane school day. He pondered his recurring dreams, the ones that felt more vivid and real than anything he experienced while awake.

In these dreams, he found himself in a world of warmth and light. There was a girl, always dressed in white, her face hidden from his view, yet her presence was undeniably comforting. She was always smiling at him, and though he never saw her features clearly, he felt a profound connection to her. Alongside her, sometimes, was a little girl, a joyful child who seemed to complete this perfect family. Their happiness felt tangible, like a promise of a future where everything was right.

he barely noticed when the teacher hurled a piece of chalk at him, snapping him back to reality. "Pay attention, Ryuk!" the teacher barked. But soon enough, the bell rang, and school was over for the day.

On his way home, Ryuk decided to take the narrow alley that would cut his journey short. The alley was dark and littered with trash and old boxes. As he walked, something caught his eye—a sharp metal rod sticking out from the debris. He picked it up, his hands shaking, and pressed the cold metal against his chest. His breath hitched as he contemplated the act, but his fear was overwhelming. In a fit of frustration, he threw the rod away and whispered to himself, "How weak I am... scared of death and afraid to live."

Suddenly, a familiar bell rang out, cutting through the silence of the alley. The sound was oddly comforting, drawing him forward as he followed it down another narrow path. There, near a tall lamppost, he spotted a small box. A white pigeon pecked at the ground nearby, but as Ryuk approached, the bird flew away, leaving him alone with the box.
Ryuk crouched down, his heart pounding in his chest as he reached out to open the box. The world around him seemed to go quiet, the only sound was the faint echo of the bell still ringing in his ears. With trembling hands, he lifted the lid and peered inside.
