Could the screeching be something else? |
"What happened next?" Mona asked. "Ghosts," I replied. Mona laughed and shook her dark head. "You can't keep putting weird things on ghosts." I shrugged. "I don't know how else to explain it." "So you figured out how to fix the dishwasher?" I nodded. "It's so damn frustrating. Solve one issue, and here comes the next. And that's when the loud noise started. I swear every electronic device in this house is haunted." "Where was it coming from?" "The freezer. Something to do with the ice maker. I swear the house was quiet. We planned to fix the dishwasher tomorrow, and then BAM, the freezer, started screaming." "Screaming?" Mona implored. I know it sounded ridiculous, but there was no other way to describe it. "Yes. High-pitched, loud, shrieking like a scream." "It's not screaming now," Mona pointed out. "True, though that doesn't mean much in this house." Mona laughed again. "How old is the fridge?" I shrugged. I knew exactly how old the worst fridge I ever owned was because I was still kicking myself for buying the side-by-side contraption. "Fourteen years." "That's not too old." Exactly! As far as I was concerned, that appliance owed me another six years. "What did you guys do to fix it?" Mona asked. "Well, he sent me downstairs to trip the breaker, thinking if he powered it off for a minute, it would restart and be quiet." "Well, at least it worked." I shook my head. "Nope, it didn't. I tripped that breaker three times, and each time, it grew louder. So I said screw it, and within an hour, the sound grew quieter, but it was still going when I went to bed. When I got up this morning, not a peep." "Hmm." "You can say it. You know it was ghosts!" WC: 300 Written For: "Daily Flash Fiction Challenge" |
