Jesse got a fun toy for Christmas. The little wind-up monkey played the violin. She played with it non-stop. Mom and Dad were starting to regret their decision buy the toy. “Jess, time for bed.” Mom needed a break. The monkey played the violin, Jesse wound it again, and again. “Just once more! I love my silly monkey!” Dad came into the room. “You’re our silly monkey. Time for bed, you.” Jesse dropped her toy, slowly walked to her bedroom, then blew a kiss to the monkey. “Bye, bye, silly monkey, I love you!” “Time for bed, little one, it’s been a busy day.” She left her with a kiss goodnight. Jesse slumbered away. A dream took form. She dreamt of a monkey. But this one could talk to her. It told her tales of home. “Jess. let me tell you a tale. Long ago I came from far away. A green jungle was my home. In this jungle was a gate of gold. Through this gate I traveled to a river. I rode on crocodiles down that river to the land of giants. Those giants made me their friend and taught me how to play the violin.” “I love music from the violin,” stated Jesse, still asleep. “After I learned about the violin, I asked to share it with someone. So the giants let me become a forever monkey. Now I am your friend as long as you wish.” Jesse smiled in her sleep. The monkey faded away. When morning came, the windup monkey sat on the dresser in Jesse’s room. She wound it up and it played the violin. She smiled and thought of a jungle with a gate. She saw a river with crocodiles and giants. She ran to the kitchen. “Mom! You’ll never guess!” W/C 298 |
