Short story for a flash fiction contest |
The patrol car was parked at the intersection. The whole area was cordoned off with yellow police tape – “Crime Scene Do Not Cross”. The Sergeant was standing on the side of the road. A crowd of people had started to gather, and Dave overheard a young guy telling the officer, “I saw the whole thing! He just stepped off the curb, and into the on-coming traffic. There’s no way that the taxi could have stopped in time.” Dave glanced towards the middle of the intersection and saw a yellow taxicab stopped in the middle of the street. There seemed to be some damage to the front of the cab, and the windshield was cracked. The cab driver was speaking to another police officer, obviously upset, talking loudly and waving his arms around. Just beyond where they were standing, Dave could see a lump in the middle of the street, covered by a white sheet. What had just happened? He had been on his way to his favorite coffee shop, but he couldn’t remember what happened – everything was fuzzy. He turned to a young girl who was standing next to him. Dave asked her what had happened, but she ignored him, apparently engrossed in the events happening in front of them. He asked her again, tapping her on the shoulder, but she continued ignoring him. Dave tried asking another bystander, an older woman, but she too acted like he wasn’t there. The whole scene was surreal. Suddenly, from behind him, a voice spoke. “Come with me Dave, it’s time to go”. Turning around, he saw what appeared to be an angel – bathed in a bright white light. As she touched him, they began ascending into the sky. It was obviously a dream. Dave didn’t believe in the afterlife! |
