A mysterious envelope seems like a game changer

Every cookie contest has a concept
And the one next week requires
A story behind every Pecan Sandy cookie.

As for ours, it was going to be a grandma classic-
Butter, flour, egg yolk, vanilla,
Sugar, the big whole pecan in the middle
And the story about how Granny said
“This cookie is a cyclops!
It has one big pecan eye.”

But you see, Betty and I put in a new cabinet
On the old side of the kitchen where
Demolishing the drywall we found
Between the layers, a sealed letter
With my Granny’s name on it, “Cherry.”

I won’t say all it said,
But she was more progressive than we thought
And my new cyclops Sandy
Has a sweet red eye.
