You got a date for the dance?” Ted asked Joey.

“Not yet…”

“Time is running out…” Ted added.

“There’s plenty of girls out there.”

“You really are a jerk aren’t you.”

“What do you mean?”

“Girls aren’t like TV shows you know. You can’t just pick one out on a whim and go with it.”

“Why not?”

“They’re girls! They have feelings!”

“We’re teenagers. This is when we’re supposed to check around, try out new things!”

“Break girl’s hearts?”

“What? Why would I break some girl’s heart?”

“Because they’re girls, they’re very serious about dating and who they date and why.”

“Huh. I thought it was just try outs with girls at our age. You know, like when you try all the sandwiches at a new place so you can find out what sandwich you like best. Then whenever you go to that place you know which one you want to order.”

“Huh, I never thought about it like that. I see your point. We aren’t picking who we’re gonna marry now, we’re just trying out all the ones that seem fun.”

“Yeah, sort of. I mean you should like who you’re dating, and them like you. But we have years and years to try out. At our age, it’s just fun!”

From the doorway, their sister Annie was listening. She just turned eighteen. Suddenly all the boys she had dated over the years made sense. The next year, when she started college, she would be going in with a lot of information gained over these try out teenage years. Suddenly she was much more excited about college than she had been!

Although… two years after she graduated college, she married the first boy she ever even had a crush on. And it lasted for the rest of their lives.
