Sometimes you need help.

I sit there staring into the abyss,
My life's been shattered with three little words.
The physician intones "You have cancer."
The rest of his announcement goes unheard.

I sit here thinking, 'What do I do now?'
My health I've always held in high regard,
has betrayed me, a body despoiled.
I am now hoisted by my own petard.

Despite my everyday outward appearance,
Deep inside I've always felt somewhat smug.
A life lived fully, projecting vigor.
Now, I want more, need more. A righteous tug.

Facing mortality shifts one's outlook.
Relying on myself? Not the smart drug.
Going it alone seems insolvent now.
Are you there, God? I need Your Divine Hug.

Note: This poem is inspired by the journey I'm presently undertaking in my life. The title, "Divine Hug," came from a very good friend, Bridget W., whose journey mirrors my own. Thank you, Bridget, and God bless.
