One biker gang loves the moon, the other venerates the sun. The watchers study. |
Prompt ▼ "This is so boring Runihura!" Tamesis whined. "All they're doing is roasting meat and making their metal steeds rumble. Can we make them fight? Send down some abominations to stir things up?" The calmer researcher shook their head. "No, that would skew the results," Runihura said. "We want to observe how fast a conflict between advanced primates evolves over females. The subjects can't know there's an eye in the sky." Below the biker gangs continued their feast at the camp ground. Beer, sodas and hot dogs. The leader of Artemis' Wheels stood on a picnic bench and raised his can high. "Here's to Luna," he said "best lookin' Old Lady a man can get!" A chorus of "Oh Yeah!" rose from other members. Karl threw his Beer to the ground as he stood up. "You're so full of it, Nick;" he yelled. "The Hounds of the Sun have the best Old Lady. My wife, Marisol is the best lookin' chick! I've biked city to city, asked around, anyone who's seen my bitch knows she's hot." Nick hopped down, raising a cloud of dust from the sandy soil. "Whatever, Karl," he said. "We all know that you're jealous. Especially since the Hymn of Artemis is way more powerful than your gang's Ode to Daylight." "Nobody insults our sacred song," Karl ranted. "Hounds, let's tear into them." Soon deadly beams of light sliced through the air. A Solar Flare struck a nearby tree which burst into flames. Moon Rays shielded some from fiery blasts while crescent blades were wielded. Leather and hair produced foul smelling smoke. Luna sat a ways off with her head in her hands. She looked up as she heard the soft rustle of dry grass. "Hey Marisol," she said. "I can't believe this. It's like that one ballad, A Croft in Clachan." Marisol raised an eyebrow and smiled. "You listen to Johnny Cash?" "Yep," she said. "There's just something about his songs that speaks to me. Why do they turn everything into a competition that turns into a mage duel? I don't get it." Marisol shook her head and sighed. "I think it's to cover something up," she guessed. "Even though we're legally hitched, Karl's never touched me or even looked the least bit interested in other women. Maybe our husbands just need us to look macho." Luna's eyes got wide, she couldn't look at Marisol. As she reviewed her marriage, the pieces fit together. "You know you might be right," Luna said. "Hey, I still have the keys to Nick's hog. Wanna go have a girl's night?" Marisol hopped onto the back of the Harley behind Luna. As the engine roared to life, the men gaped. Before anyone could move, Luna revved up and sped down the gravel road. The light faded and the bikers were left in a gloaming twilight. Steaming sap and smoldering leaves were the only sounds for a second. In a flurry of panic, the bikers extinguished the magical blazes. Up in the darkening sky, Runihura and Tamesis looked down. "What an unexpected result," Runihura observed. "Apparently shock can quell fury." "Yes," Tamesis said. "We'll have to adjust our calculations if we wish to destroy this world." Word count:558 |
