This is a reminder that today is one of the "good times" |
This is a story of an everyday life of an everyday person doing everyday things. She is sitting on her office at home, looking blankly at her monitor with tasks that needed to be completed hours ago. She has been working from home since the Covid 19 pandemic, and only sets foot on their physical office when needed. She is stuck in the moment as she listens to Lights Are On by Tom Rosenthal. She wonders what does the Artist meant by "Build us a dome and rest here with me" Why build a dome? Is it to barricade against time? She closes her eyes despite the clatter of incoming chat messages. She is sure they can wait. She needs the pause. She thinks how time is so sudden. It is so merciless and angry. She remembers when she was in College, and enjoying the cold and sticky breeze of an old beach hut with her drunk college friends. She remembers when her mother was taking a picture of her brother on New Year's Eve at their home. She remembers a social media post of one of her closest friend's dad in a wheelchair with a dextrose attached to him. She remembers the dads of her friends are dead. She remembers. Time is so merciless and angry. She opened her eyes, absorbing the heat of the fan and the beat of every note on the song. She will remember this as a good time. Everything is flat - nothing to celebrate and nothing to cry. Today is a good day. Today is one of the good times. She hoped that the everyday life of an everyday person doing similar every day things is flat. She knows there is nothing much she can do of time. The time that is always angry and merciless. She knows she is calm and compassionate. She isn't the same as time. She can control her thoughts and actions. She halt the pause, and looks at the chat messages that needed her attention. She moves on to her everyday life, doing everyday things even though knowing that time is in a hurry. She doesn't care. She doesn't need to seize that day. To her, everyday life is what makes her contented. Flat is contentment. Flat is happiness and stable. And she will remember that. |
