She wasn’t sure what she wanted to say until she was older

She was always mysterious about her past.

She just appeared in the town one day
Having driven from four states away
With clothing packed in her beat up car
And hair done up like a movie star.

She applied for ten jobs and interviewed for two
Got up early; there’s always plenty to do
And prepared and was polished as much as could be;
and was hired to write guides for the utility.

She flirted with women a bit and with men
But we couldn’t see what she was into then,
Classical music or Hallmark romance
Or 90s grunge and sagging pants.

She kissed like a person who might pull away
And only cared for what procedures say
Editing guides for water technicians
Knowing less of feelings than admonitions.

When she knew what she wanted, she was old
Spent her whole life doing as told
Getting up early every day
And writing a book on what she had to say.

She was always mysterious about her past.
