The Ride

"I think we're going the wrong way."

“What?” Dad asked, “You told me it was this way…”

“Yes, but this part doesn’t look right,” Jane said, “and I’m sure I watched the whole time because I knew I’d need you to drive me the next time I went.”

“Well, do you remember the address, we could look it up.”

“No, I don’t know the address. I was just in their car. I’m sorry Dad!

“OK, well I’ll call Andrea’s house and her mom or dad can give me the address what’s Andrea’s last name?”

“I don’t know…”

“How can you not know, you’re both in the same class?”

“But nobody calls us by our last name, just our first names.”

“Oh. Well, maybe Mom knows… call her.”

Mom didn’t know Andrea’s last name, nor where Andrea lived. But Mom did know something about Jane…
“Bring Jane back to the house, I have an idea.” Back they went.

Mom got into the car. “OK Jane, I want you to tell us where to go, start here… left or right?”

“Left!” called Jane, excited now!”

On every straight street she told Dad to go straight. Then at every corner when they needed to turn, she yelled out ‘left’ or ‘right’ and even things like ‘at that red house with the white fence.” Dad was amazed!

When they got to Andrea’s house, other kids were still going in, so she wasn’t even late. Mom copied the address and got Andrea’s last name off the mailbox. “We’ll pick you up at five!”

“How did she do that?” Dad asked in amazement.

“Obviously she takes after your wife…” Mom said.

“Well, Wife, how do we get to Billers? I think I’d like to take you out to lunch!”

And life was good again.
