Dawn's Innocent Eyes by Marilyn Mackenzie "Ring," went the doorbell. Standing at the front door was a stranger with curly, black hair and baby blue eyes. His smile resembled the innocence of a new day, a smile that reminded me of the dawn. Imagine my disappointment when I discovered that this stranger with the innocent smile was just a door-to-door salesman. He was a good salesman, though. In no time at all, I was fascinated with the description of his product, and I knew I couldn't let him down. His eyes danced as he spoke. I couldn't help but feel that I would buy everything in his salesman's box. How sly he was. He knew no female could ever resist his merry laugh and twinkling eyes. And I bought it all when his speech was done. He scurried down the steps, whistling as he kicked cans and kicked up dirt and leaves in the street. I couldn't help but wonder if anyone else could have resisted that guy with the laughing eyes. "Goodness grapenuts," I said, "what in the world will I do with four dozen of these things?" I peeked out through the window, to see him scampering, disappearing around the corner. The Cub Scout selling doughnuts door-to-door. |
