It wasn’t fair to make you choose, From there I had just you to lose

My friend, deepest, most true
Above all the rest, I confided in you
A troubled soul; a beleaguered heart
Just a person, who felt set apart

Still, you could feel for me
Expounding in heartfelt sympathy
You listened, you cared, then reached out
Knowing what friendship is all about

And as you helped me, I helped you
Through difficult time, as you came unglued
I tried to listen, never to judge
Shielding you from trouble, I would not budge

But I needed you to be something more
I needed a center, I needed a core
And in you there seemed a loving wealth
But it was something I had to find in myself

It wasn’t fair to make you choose
From there I had just you to lose
For love can’t be coerced or forced
It must run it’s natural course

And though your heart I’d love to steal
You would still feel as you feel
And I’ll try hard just to understand
To walk away the better man

And be it fair or be it sour
Love defines our finest hour
And may make fools of you and I
Or make us lie at night and cry

Through a turbulent time, we have withstood
I’m sorry I asked of you more than I should
Please forgive me, but do not forget
I hold this love without want or regret
