written for round 2 finals of Sugar Cube's Mini-Slam
The abuse was a constant nightmare
Going on and on and on,
Living a lie from day to day
Singing someone else’s song.

How dirty it made me feel
Knowing that it was wrong;
How many years I endured;
They went on way too long.

My mind was no longer whole
For you destroyed my soul;
For you, was it just a game?
I guess I will never know.

But it wasn’t meant to hurt
I think I knew in my heart,
The abuse was our secret pleasure
Right from the very start.

And in return you gave me
The Universe! Knowledge! Truth!
You laid them at my feet,
Rare gifts for a simple youth.

As I look back I wonder,
And often I want to cry;
I search in my soul and ask,
“Was the price of freedom too high?”
