A musically-inspired challenge with writing prompts posted twice a month. |
|
The One-Line Lyric Challenge is back with new prompts! Two new songs will be posted each month with a related writing prompt. The challenge, should you chose to accept it, is as follows. Lyric Prompt: Write a poem or story and include the prompt lyric somewhere in your work, word for word. It's up to you how you want to incorporate the line. If you don't like the provided lyric prompt, you can pick a different line from the lyrics (only one line).Song Prompt: Write a poem or story inspired by the song. You do not need to include any lyrics directly, and in some cases there may not be any lyrics. Just write whatever the music or lyrics inspires. Try not to copy the song too closely. Please link back to the challenge somewhere in your entry using {item:lyric} or {image:2352588-60%} and post your entry as a link in the comments here. The Prizes: 5K GPs, a merit badge, plus a guaranteed review of your entry. If you enter both prompts that month, you will get double the prizes! This is a challenge, not a contest. So you get prizes just for entering! You are encouraged to listen and comment on the music or other people's entries, even if you don't plan to enter. ![]() |

Project 21 Enjoy the ear and eye candy! Song Prompt: "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" by The Temptations (Project 21) Song Lyrics ▶︎ Write a story or poem inspired by the song. No need to include specific lyrics. |
| Nothing feels more appropriate right now than the Blues, so here are some traveling blues for you this month. Let John Popper and his harmonica take you on a little journey, but be back in time for supper. And don't let the mountains win. "The Mountains Win Again" by Blues Traveler Song Lyrics ▶︎ Lyric Prompt: "Never meant to come to life" |
| Here's the song prompt for January! Hootie & The Blowfish is an American rock band formed by Darius Rucker in 1986, before he went on to have a pretty successful solo career in country music. I personally prefer his rock music. There's something about the chord progression in the verses that just gets me. Thanks, WdC, for waiting for me. Song Prompt: "I Will Wait" by Hootie & The Blowfish (Prompt closed) Song Lyrics ▶︎ Write a story or poem inspired by the song. No need to include specific lyrics. |
| Yes, the One-Line Lyric Challenge is back again with a new look and a brand new lyric prompt for the New Year. With a song that you probably haven't heard before. Or at least, if you have, not the acoustic version. Which is better than the original, I think. The rules are the same: Enjoy the music and incorporate the given lyric prompt into a poem or story, due at the end of the month. "New Me" by Ella Eyre Song Lyrics ▶︎ Lyric Prompt: "Got a new key" (Prompt closed) |
| This will be the last prompt for a little while. I've said before, summers are for endings. All the major changes in my life have happened over the summer, and this is far from an exception. In this case, an ending without a beginning. Or, an ending without an end? When I figure my own life out, this challenge will eventually return. I'm sorry that I can't give a timeline for that. Running through hell, heaven can wait. Song Prompt: "Long Road to Ruin" by the Foo Fighters (Prompt closed) Lyrics: ▶︎ Write a poem or story inspired by the song. No need to incorporate any lyrics. |
| Probably a new artist to most of you, and definitely a new song. Orla Gartland is an Irish singer, songwriter and musician with a very unique style that's hard to describe or pin down. She got her start on YouTube at the ripe old age of 13, and has really come into her own and found her style. There's something I just love about a clean melodic voice with heavy electric guitar behind. This song was released in October of last year as part of an album of the same name. "Everybody Needs a Hero" by Orla Gartland Lyrics: ▶︎ Lyric Prompt: "I'm not as tough as I look" (Prompt closed) If you don't like the given prompt, you can chose another line from the lyrics above. |
| I think it's time for a little bit of a breakdown. Hawaiian style. We'll return to your regularly scheduled life in a little over 3 minutes. Song Prompt: "Breakdown" by Jack Johnson (Prompt closed) Lyrics: ▶︎ Write a poem or story inspired by the song. No need to incorporate any lyrics. |
| This one is dedicated to my Granny D, who just passed away last Saturday (6/28)-- a year and a half after my Grampa D. After a long battle with dementia, she is at peace now. I hope they are together again, where ever they are. "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree" by the Andrew's Sisters. Lyrics: ▶︎ Lyric Prompt: Sit down under the apple tree (Prompt closed) (Feel free to change the tense if it's easier to work with.) If you don't like the given prompt, you can chose another line from the lyrics above. |
| This popular song, written by keyboardist Eric Stefani and performed by Gwen Stefani, is actually a play on Disneyland's Magic Kingdom. The intro is the safety announcement for the Matterhorn. It's in reference to a tragic incident in 1984, when someone stood up on the ride and was decapitated. I find it still relevant today. Lots of imagery to work with, so happy writing. Song Prompt: "Tragic Kingdom" by No Doubt (Prompt closed) Lyrics: ▶︎ Write a poem or story inspired by the song. No need to incorporate any lyrics. |
| This month, we have the smooth tones of a mutli-talented singer-slash-rapper-slash-actress. I got my education from the University of California, and my miseducation from Lauryn Hill. Probably should issue a warning about the potential for musical whiplash here at the One-Line Lyric Challenge. "Everything is Everything" by the Lauryn Hill Lyrics: ▶︎ Lyric Prompt: Speak (in) tongues (Prompt closed) (Words in parentheses are optional) If you don't like the given prompt, you can chose another line from the lyrics above. |
