Giving me the Creeps

The noises from the roof started and stopped again for the fifth time. The building was usually bustling with activity, but with the holidays, businesses closed, and school out for Christmas break, every creak, crack, and bumping sound became amplified in the quiet office.

When the noises started again, I turned in my chair, staring up at the twenty-foot ceiling, wishing I had x-ray vision to see what was happening on the roof. Since I was just a normal human being, I had two choices, get up off my butt and investigate, or sit there and try to ignore the annoying sounds.

Not the type to sit idly by, I got up and headed into the cold December morning and out the door. I turned toward the building, looking up in the direction of where the noises came from, but it was impossible to see if an animal was up there. A person would be easy to spot. I walked around the building, moving further back, hoping something would happen to clue me in. Nothing happened.

Cursing under my breath, I gave up and walked toward the door when screeching brakes from a semi-truck pierced the quiet and sent dozens of birds scattering from the top of my building.

"So that explains it," I muttered and marched inside. God only knew what they were doing up there.

Back at my desk, the incessant creaking noises returned.

"This isn't over yet?" I yelled, staring up at the ceiling.

As much as I hated the constant sounds of traffic, at that moment, I would take that over the creepy sounds coming from the roof.
