A black cat crossed Tracey's path. She was never the same again.

Contest Prompt

It was a beautiful spring day, the kind where you can’t stand being inside. Tracey Moore felt her heart make a skip in its beat. “Oh, poor thing. Can’t you get down?”

The black cat, caught up in the tree, meow’d plaintively. Tracey looked around for assistance, but she was alone on the neighborhood street. “Here, kitty, kitty,” she encouraged, raising her arms high.

A soft bundle of fur cuddled in Tracey's waiting arms. “That was easy enough,” she laughed, offering the cat freedom. The feline refused to go. It clung, as a stray dog began barking, threatening harm. The approaching canine growled

“Go away,” demanded Tracey. A second mangy canine raced to the scene. Soon there was a pack surrounding her.

“Let me out of here,” screamed Tracey, feet dancing madly at snapping jaws. The black cat raced up on top of her head, pushing Tracey’s hair in her eyes. Its voice became a siren call higher and sharper than the canine chorus below.

It was as if time had stopped still. The sound and mad motion around her ceased to exist. Tracey’s hands swept her hair away, eyes searching for the cause. “Witch’s are real?”

“As real as Halloween. Thanks for saving Trixie, my Familiar. I sent her on an errand and worried when she didn’t come back. I heard her call.”

Tracey felt her new living hat jump into the witch’s soft clutches. “It’s O.K. my pretty. I cursed the mutts into resting for a second and made that second become time standing still.

“And what reward would you like? A love potion perhaps? I’m good at that.” Asked the witch.

Tracey shook her head. “I’d rather have you two as new friends.” Which is how she became a witch.
