Manny's Turn

Manny was never a big fan of fishing, but because the hobby appeared to be the glue for his friends, he gave it a shot many times. And that's where his taste for fishing waned. He usually never caught a thing while his buddies would load up their stringers. After a while, his friends insisted he went along because he was their good luck person, much to Manny's chagrin.


Today's fishing trip would take them near Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio to fish near a bridge over the Ladue River. It was a gorgeous day, and his friend's attitudes were just as bright, forcing him to join in on their jocularity. The forty-five minute drive seemed to drag, and Manny was glad when they reached the river.


Everyone unloaded their gear and headed for the shore on the east side of river where reeds and underwater branches littered the water, the perfect spot for fishing, at least for his friends. He'd only caught one since they started going to that river.


Fifteen minutes later, his friends reeled in their catches, but Manny's line never flinched. Once the teasing started, Manny left the group to fish off the bridge, but instead of casting outward, he chose to cast his line under the bridge against the flow of the water. The water's turbulence caused the tip of his rod to dive occasionally as he watched.


Soon, the rod's tip took a heavy dip, and he yanked to lock the hook. As he reeled in, he watched his line sway from side to side like the string of a kite in a heavy breeze. A yell escaped once she saw the huge largemouth bass. His friends joined him but had no luck while Manny's continued, much to their chagrin.
