Words: 299 FOR: "Daily Flash Fiction Challenge" ![]() You really, really can't blame Jeremy. He didn't want to be Santa Claus. But he had the jolly looks and, with cushioning, the figure, and his doting aunt had volunteered him for the job. "It's for a good cause," she had chirruped. "What cause? And I'm young enough to be Santa's great-grandson." "Oh, they'll put make-up and the beard will hide most of your face anyway. It's to help Mr. Lewis, you know, his department store Santa got flu." "I don't call blatant capitalism a good cause." "Well, how about chocolate cake?" "Now THAT is a good cause," Jeremy agreed. He grumbled as he got into the Santa Suit, "It's hot and scratchy." He grumbled as they stuck the beard on, "It's tickly and scratchy." He grumbled as he put the Santa hat ![]() "As long as you don't scratchy this fixture," Mr. Lewis quipped, trying to keep Jeremy in a good mood. Finally, they got Jeremy into the specially decorated North-Pole area of the store, where the toy shop with all its treasures could be seen plainly. "I hope they've all got waterproof and everything-proof diapers on," Jeremy whispered, as Mr. Lewis sat him down on a red armchair facing a queue of bright-eyed little ones. Mr. Lewis gave him a reassuring pat on his shoulder and went to make sure the sales-folk (elves) were strategically positioned to overhear the kids' hearts' desire and recognize and trap the relevant parents. "I want a pony," the first girl said. "Now, you need to be careful of that," Jeremy replied. "I once fell off a pony and sprained my wrist." The nearest elf leaned in. "Belinda, dear, we have some lovely rocking-horses ..." Jeremy scowled at the elf and stated, “This is none of your business.” |
