Explanations and instructions of all things Writing.Com. |
Members with a Basic membership level and above may create and host Folders to help organize their Portfolio. Folders are created solely to store the individual items in your portfolio, such as Static Items, Groups, Message Forums, Campfire Creatives, etc. The number of folders you may create and the number of items you may store within them is limited to the size of your portfolio based on your membership level. Folders are useful for organizing items by type, genre, time periods, style, rating, etc. Treat them as "collections" within your portfolio. Readers are able to search the site for folder collections, so be as accurate as you can with your description of that folder. That will help readers find your folder quickly and easily when they search for your topic! Folders are created just like any other item type on Writing.Com. There are two methods for creating and saving folders. You can select the Writing link in the navigation under the Writing.Com logo, then scroll down and click on Portfolio Folder. Or, you can go to your Portfolio and select Create Item just below your Portfolio tab. Select Folder from the links that drop down. In either case, follow the instructions in the Create an Folder Item window. For a detailed explanation of creating an folder item, please see "Create/Edit a Folder" . NOTE: Folders are not considered static items! Please do not think if you post your poem, short story, etc. in the description of your folder that it will show up as a static item. Folders are simply a storage area for your portfolio items. Frequently Asked Questions How do I move one item into a folder? To move one item at a time, select Edit from the Item Tools window of your item and choose the folder location you want the item moved to from the Folder window on this edit page. When you complete the edit, only the location of the item within your portfolio will have changed. As long as you have edited nothing else, your item will look exactly the same. How do I move many items into a folder? Bulk item management tools help you manage your portfolio by allowing you to quickly and easily move items into a folder or change the order of items within a folder. For complete details of how to do this within your portfolio, please read Move Items To Folder in "Portfolio" Tab. Do access restrictions on a folder affect it's child item? No. The access restrictions on a Folder do not affect the access restrictions of the items assigned to that Folder item. Restricting access on a folder will remove that folder from display within your public portfolio to those who do not meet that access requirement. It will also disallow the viewing of that folder's contents from the listing in the Portfolio tab. However, it will NOT restrict access on the individual items assigned to that Folder item. These items will still be included in and accessible via Writing.Com's public listing pages unless you also set the access restrictions on those individual items. If you do not want these items to be viewed, each individual item's access level will need to be set. How do I move an item from my Recycling Bin? The Recycling Bin is a special Writing.Com system folder. When you delete an item, the system moves it into your Recycling Bin. If no further action is taken with these items, they will be purged automatically after two weeks. Or, they may be purged at any time using the Purge Recycling Bin command. Once purged, an item cannot be recovered. If you change your mind and decide to keep an item that is in the Recycling Bin, you can do so by using one of the above methods. Recovery must occur before the item(s) are purged.1 Recommended Reading Footnotes |
