Alaska
I do appreciate the lack of jet lag, or any lag for that matter. Hello Alaska! You are one gorgeous state with those dark green evergreen sentinels framed against a dazzling blue sky.
You resemble my home province with your wide-open spaces and seemingly endless water. I thought I'd be a bit blase when I espied yet another moose, or a bear, but I surprised myself. They are magnificent creatures no matter where they roam. I still marvel at those gangly, spindly legs supporting that bulky body. I am jealous of a moose's agility and gracefulness.
I am more than familiar with ice and snow. It tends to linger for six long months. Sure, I've built a ramshackle, crude igloo. I've even sat inside it for a brief spell. When I sit upon ice it is never a lovely statement sculpture. It is simply an unyielding, freezing lump of ice that I see everywhere. It exists to trip me up and has initiated far too many injuries.
The Aurora Ice Museum is at once breathtaking and beautiful. Who knew ice could be molded into something so impressive. I plunked myself onto a real ice bar stool and I did not miss being able to spin it 'round and 'round. I laughed when the agreeable bartender proffered an appletini resplendent within an ice wine glass. Two more firsts for me. I have always viewed ice as something that clinks within a drink. Since this is a virtual experience I ferried my ice glass back home to languish within my freezer. I plan to whet my whistle with it during the endless humid days of summer. No one wanted a chip. It may be a touristy gimmick, but I liked it.
We were as exuberant children sliding on the floor. This sure beats wood or tile underfoot.
Viewing the aurora borealis is a divine, awe-inspiring moment. Wow! Amazing! Green has always been my favourite colour, but this green shimmered and glowed. Dare I describe the light spectacle as luminescent, breathing, pulsating, shimmying? There are not enough superlatives. I only hope my camera captured some of this natural beauty.
The non-stop chinwagging in the geothermal rock pool is a cherished memory. We soaked. We spoke. For a lovely moment we were carefree.
