A Journal to impart knowledge and facts |
July 22, 2015 I'm going to start today to record on a daily basis whatever happens to strike my fancy. So, it is a very cool breezy day. I just posted 5 short book reviews to The Monthly Reading Challenge. I'm suppose to put away some winter wood today from the woodpile outside but I'm playing hookey from work to write so starting this blog will get done. I'm having a daily fight with a flock of English Sparrows that are trying to take over my barn. They are making a terrible mess so they have to go. I have destroyed several nests so far they don't leave but they get out of the barn when I am around. I'm just starting the fight so I guess I don't know how far I have to go to discourage them. I'm trying not to spread myself to thin on WDC because I find so many things that are interesting here and I am trying to work on a new story. I really enjoy sitting at my desk with a cup of tea and reading blogs on WDC. |
Christmas trees are like a blank page, tell us how you're going to decorate yours. Do you do a theme? Do you put up just family mementoes, maybe a mixture of store bought and homemade? Lights or no lights. We have used a 7-foot tree for years. We used to go to the woods and get a real tree when the children were all still home. It got to be a problem as the years of heavy snow made that a problem. Everyone was in favor of an artificial tree which we purchased one year at the end of Christmas when trees were on sale. I used to buy one new decoration a year for the tree. There were so many decorations I could not use them all, so I stopped buying more. Now I decorate with the ones I like best. There are lots of favorites. I used to have a string of objects that twirled when you plugged them in that was fun. The string stopped working but, I put them on the tree anyway. It has little angels playing instruments, Mice in a house and other small creature. Some of my decorations are home made. Lots of angels and a star at the top. The tree got old and some of the limbs broke a couple years ago. I shortened it and used it anyway. Then someone put a different tree in the closet last year, so I used the different one. Over the years someone has come into our house and traded trees at least one other time. I use whatever is there. Also, put up a manger scene every year. Christmas brings a special change to the house. Most years I put the tree up the first day of Buck hunting season and take it down on New Years Day. Last year I put it up earlier and took it down later. Have not decided about this year yet. Have to open the closet and see what is in there. |
Sarah Addison Allen said, "November, looks like the world was covered in a cobbler crust of brown sugar and cinnamon.” Let's talk about desserts, especially ones with brown sugar and cinnamon that you love. Invalid Merit Badge #698735 Hi. I really like apple crisp. I stopped eating it and making it years ago. I bet I have not had any in 30 years. I do make apple pie now, which is just as good. I can make it with a quarter of a cup of sugar. Another favorite is snickering doodle muffins. Put in a little extra cinnamon to make them tasty. When I cook, I don't usually use brown sugar for anything. I have not used brown sugar in several years. I use cane sugar. for baking. Most cooky recipes take 2 cups of sugar. I only use one. Cinnamon can be added to sugar cookie recipe if you want to experiment with flavor. We like lemon flavoring here. Lemon meringue pie, lemon bar cookies, lemon cake mix cookies. I make muffins, because they use less sugar. Lots of flavor with fruit; blueberry applesauce muffins have cinnamon, banana muffins quicker than banana bread and last longer it is a large recipe. Going to try cranberry recipe for Thanksgiving. Have a great day. I lost my computer again yesterday. Using Keiths again. |
Prompt: "There is always a butt in this imperfect world." Anne Bronte Write about this quote in your Blog entry today. |
Have fun with these words: recipe, disaster, spices, market, random, chicken and a barn. The recipe would be a disaster if I did not use spices that I found at the market when I was looking for a chicken. I should have looked in the barn I would have had more service. It does not help to go shopping in any random store you happen to enter. Bye |
Cynthia Rylant says, "Food is better in November than any other time of the year.” Do you agree or disagree with Ms. Rylant. Are there certain foods that make November more special than other months? In the northeastern part of the USA harvest begins near the end of august and continues until weather kills whatever is left. Personally, I eat things I like all year round. If I'm not too lazy to cook them. I think more of pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving. Jellied cranberry sauce is good with smoothies any time of year. My favorite meals are a salad and a burger or a piece of fish or a piece of chicken. Keith needs more, so I cook more. Then I eat more. There are seasonal things I get more of like fresh tomatoes off the vine or corn on the cob off a roadside stand. Zucchiniand all kinds of squash. I guess harvest is what Thanksgiving is all about. As for the quote above, food is fresher in November but not necessarily better. A balance of food intake and exercise is necessary. The End. |
