Gravy

In the land of Mashed Potato
where the peas roll from Laredo
red the carrots round the edges
roasted beef all sliced and wedges
there the gravy rains as blessing
brown and rich the taters dressing
down the canyons hot and steaming
to fill the mind with mealtime dreaming.

Physics

The balance teeters in the wind,
weight shifting slightly
from one side to another,
but compensation rules,
equilibrium returns
and movement ceases.

In the distance, waves crash upon the shore,
obeying their own instructions.

Scribble

If the muse is perhaps a type of sybil,
a lady of great wisdom and foresight,
then I might not feel the need to quibble,
could avail myself of her famed insight.

Perhaps make sense of my lit’ry dribble
to raise me above all this common blight,
invigorate my usual scribble,
transforming it to a vision of light.

Westward

Wanderlust drove them,
westward, ever westward,
their slow caterpillars
of wagons creaking, creeping,
across the empty plains,
blue mountains distant
draw them to the pass
and hope beyond to settle.

Monolith

A single stone,
monolithic,
raised like an accusing finger
to the sky,
its companion
and crossbeam
fallen at its feet,
gateway to an age lost.

Life

Reward or payback,
sweetener or switch,
carrot or stick,
so the daily round
revolves once more,
eternal karma,
the wages of sin
and blessings abound.

Close up of a Mantis head.

Mantis

It’s so easy being green,
here amongst the leaves,
to be silent and unseen;
you’ll not have time to grieve,
these folded arms will spring,
as samurai swords unsheathed,
to my embrace will bring,
and ease my hunger’s need.

Inscrutable

The tuxedo fits him like a glove;
he wears it as though born to this,
these privileged environments,
his natural habitat, his world,
and he still, silent, immovable,
as his gaze falls on you, a glance
penetrating to your very core,
his cat’s eyes narrowed in disdain.

Indoor Cat

Indoor cat stares on the outside world
through window raised for air and light,
sniffs the breeze and perks her pointed ears,
tensed at loud and squabbling crows,
the thrum of traffic on distant highway,
the trees in whispered conversation,
gravelled footfall crunches on nature trail,
the heady drug of raucous silence.

I Really Don’t Like Making Up Prompts

What succeeds is success
and what succeeds is
a toothless canary
ignoring, of course,
canaries don’t have teeth
and I will have to pay
when they present the bill
for another failed joke.

Line count: 8

For Express It In Eight, 07.31.22
Prompt: Succeed.
