Foresight
Last match in the box,
and the stygian darkness
of the labyrinth.
Hold back the night
for one more brief moment,
or save it for despair?
The future beckons,
a land of looming gloom.

Mountain Men
In the days beyond years
a few wandered to the wild,
to bide with none but their own
authority; a lawless bunch,
was frontier man and bold
to live by morality alone,
but laws are all we have,
when ethics sleep on Boot Hill.

Archery
The bow bends with stress
as you draw back the string;
tension hardens the muscles,
yew wood and twisted cord,
as concentration grasps
the target in your narrowed sight,
all released in one intent.
The quiver supplies new arrow.

Prompts: Stress and quiver.

Vesuvius
Volcanic eruption,
great plume of smoke,
ash grey billowing,
the mountain spews
dark cloud of doom,
spreads malevolence,
feathers and falls
to cloak the land.

Fool
The fool in motley array,
em-bell-ished and face painted,
decked in loud colour,
draped in his idiot rags,
performs for the king,
who watches intently
the dance of the halfwit,
aware of the truth thus revealed.

Partners
Sleep or despair,
the keyboard pillows both,
nestles the mind
somewhere between G and O,
on the way perhaps,
to an exultant shout
of GOTCHA,
as if in victory.

Willow
And after these,
what’s left to be said of willows?
To drape a leafy hand,
a trailer in the stream,
raising a wake to ride the current,
a greeting to the sea.
So speaks the weeping willow tree
of stories long forgotten.

Storm
Dark thunder clouds gather
as the storm swallows the sun,
the gloom curdles in the shadows
and spreads across the land;
the first fat drops begin to fall
and the wind hurls them sideways,
a jagged ribbon of blue-white light
streaks to earth in a thunderclap.

Lines
The lines upon my face,
engravings of the years,
hieroglyphs of history,
battle scars of life and time,
record of the pain and gain,
imprint of the loss and hurt,
the triumph and armistice,
the mirror knows it all.

Nailbrush
Strong am I
and strong my bristles,
strong to clean
your nails as whistles.
Hard am I.
e’en harder than nails.
I’ll not bend
nor let dirt leave trails.
