As an Athiest, I'd prefer to see the whole 10 thrown away and replaced with something more rational. But I must admit I like the 'Golden Rule' the 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you'. Famously formulated by Confuscius 300+ years before Christianity. I don't want to be confrontational, but I really do think that the majority of holy books were written for cultures that stopped existing a thousand years ago. We've come a long way since then, our ethical systems have improved through rational debate, scientific discovery, and through the lessons taught by such horrific crimes as the Holocaust. I think we can do better than 10 rules written 3000 years ago, and which are contained in the same book that promotes slavery, stoning to death as a punishment for what we now wouldn't even consider a crime, and the genocide of countless tribes in the name of yahweh. |
