Memoirs, I call them biographies. Self-indulgent and exploitative? There is a risk, but if it’s with honest intentions I think one can avoid that. I wouldn’t want to write a biography of my own life because I don’t think that’s worth reading (other than the occasional blog about what happened in my life). But a whole book on the subject, spare me. Too boring. I read the Obama biography and part of the Clinton biography. They were interesting to read because they are famous people and they had noteworthy experiences. I bought the memoirs of the famous Dutch writer and poet M. Vasalis. Didn’t get to it yet, although it is part of my bookshelf for a couple of years now. That’s how much I am interested in the genre. Not quite! Most biographies are no memoirs because they are not written by the person itself. You have to be a good writer AND have had an interesting life. Not many have both qualities! And oh, I forgot one: I want to read the Jobs biography. Thought that would be interesting. On my bucket list.
