To be fair, I'd say that 80% of BoM is a mess and a chaos because it's all improvised, and there's real luck if a storyline fetches up at something that feels like a climax and a conclusion. When I fork a branch and strike off in a new direction, it's usually because I've thought of a better way to do things, or a more plausible and coherent development, inspired (if that's not too kind a word) by the wreckage of what I've done before. My current branch ("Tongues of Fire" and previous, and the chapters coming next) is kind of like that. This whole area is one that I like, but -- and I mean no disrespect or criticism of imaj or WordSmitty when I say it -- there are too many things going on for me to feel comfortable about continuing an abandoned branch. So what I've done is find an earlier fork, then struck off toward where I want to go while reducing complexity by ignoring some of the other stuff that's going on. It's one reason two of the chapters (today's and yesterday's) are editorial variations on chapters by imaj, and why there's a similar variation on a chapter by WordSmitty coming up. I keenly wanted to keep some of the plot from this area but didn't want to pick up the baggage I wasn't interested in. |
