Growing up in Alaska, indoor plumbing was a tremendous improvement over the outhouse.

The freezer in the unheated shop only had to be plugged in half the year.

And electricity furnished safe, reliable light for reading the printed word during cold winter nights (and warm rainy summer nights).

I'd say the best invention is civilization.
