"This thing works with humans as well, ol' brother of mine!"

"How would you know that?" John asked.

"Well, I tried it out. By accident actually," Frank answered with a smile. "After I picked it up, I got in my car, still pretty POed about my job. So, while I was sitting there, miffed by what had happened, I just started looking this thing over." He held up the gadget.

"And I pushed the red button...just so happened that it was pointed at a black dude who collects parking tolls at our office building. When nothing happened, other than a click I tried pushing the button again. This time the top of the device was pointing toward one of our executives, a fat, middle-aged white guy. In fact, it was the asshole who fired me...Mr. Evans."

"So...you mean...they..." John hesitated, pointing his index fingers at each other.

When he reached into the black guy's pocket, he pulled out some keys, and they worked in his Mercedes. It was like reality had changed to accommodate this switch."

"Weird," John said. "Did you try it again."

"Believe it or not, I didn't. I actually got scared. I worried over this thing most of the evening, and then decided to bring it over to see what you thought."

"Well, the first thing I think is that we should swap back my animals, if we can."

"An excellent next test," Frank said. He turned and zapped the cat and dog hybrids in turn, and they were back to normal.

"I wasn't touching the device that time," John said.

"Didn't matter," Frank answered. "We were returning them to normal, so it doesn't matter if your reality changed. It changed back to what you already remembered since you were touching this thing when we first changed them."

"So," John said. "Where do we go from here?"

"I think we need to conduct a test with more people. What are you doing in the morning?"

John decided...
