The doctor sighed as he looked at the chart in his hands before turning to face Emily as she sat on the end of the exam table, "Emily, I know we've talked about this before, but you really need to put on some weight. If you don't, you're going to run into health problems from being underweight."
Emily's face began to turn red as she glanced at her feet hanging below her before replying quietly, "I know."
"Look, I know that it can seem counter-intuitive, but I'm not lying to you," The doctor said, glancing up at her with a concerned expression on his face, "I know that everything you see on TV and the internet says you need to be thin, but there is such a thing as too thin."
"I know," Emily replied, her voice barely above a whisper.
"I'd like you to try to put on about forty over the next year, though, at the very minimum, you need to gain about twenty pounds," the doctor said, setting her chart down on the counter that ran along one of the walls.
"Alright," Emily replied, her voice still quiet, "I'll try."
"Good to hear! Now, if you just want to check out at the front desk, they'll get you scheduled to come back in six months so we can see how you're doing on putting on some weight."
Emily slowly slid off the exam table and moved to put her shirt back on as the doctor left the room. She stopped, glancing down at her torso, and let out a quiet sigh. Her chest was completely flat, with the only thing giving away the fact she was a girl being her feminine nipples. Her stomach was concave, and she could see every one of her ribs above her noticeable hip bones.
"It's not like I want to be this thin, I just..." Emily said to herself as she slipped her shirt back on, feeling the fabric teasing her nipples slightly, and let out another sigh, "Why couldn't I be more like Sam?"
A few minutes later, Emily walked away from the front desk at the doctor's office and made her way outside, shielding her eyes from the bright October sun. She glanced around the parking lot, smiling as she saw a boy waving at her from an older car and hurried over to him.
"So, how did it go?" Michael asked as Emily climbed into the passenger seat and buckled herself in.
"The doctor said I need to put on at least twenty pounds," Emily said, turning to look out the window as Michael started the car and began driving out of the parking lot.
"Really?" Michael asked, a flicker of a smile crossing his lips before quickly disappearing, though Emily didn't notice as she continued to watch the scenery go by outside the car.
"Yeah," Emily said, letting her shoulders sag and letting her head flop to the side, "but I have no idea how I'm going to do that."
"You could try eating more," Michael teased.
"I just... I never really feel that hungry," Emily complained, turning to look at her boyfriend with her big brown eyes, "I mean, it's not like I try to be this thin. I just am!"
"Calm down," Michael said with a hint of exasperation in his voice, "I was just joking. Though, honestly, you really should eat more. I've seen rabbits who eat more than you do," he said with a chuckle.
"I know," Emily said with a sigh, "I just don't know what to do."
Michael was quiet for a while before responding.
