Christina tapped her fingers on the arm of the couch as she thought. "Hmm... how about we go out and grab something to eat? I'm starving, and there's nothing good in the fridge."
Cameron considered it. He was actually feeling a bit hungry again. A quick glance at the kitchen clock confirmed it was a little past noon. Time really flew when you lost yourself in gaming.
"Yeah, sure," he said, getting up from the couch. "Anywhere in mind?"
Christina grabbed her phone off the coffee table and stood up. "How about that new burger place that opened up downtown? I've been meaning to try it."
Cameron shrugged. "Sounds good to me."
He grabbed his wallet and keys while Christina slipped on a pair of sandals and grabbed her purse. A few minutes later, the two of them were in Christina's car, the A/C blasting to fight off the summer heat.
As they drove, the siblings chatted about random things—music, upcoming plans, and what Anna might be up to. Within fifteen minutes, they pulled into the parking lot of the burger joint.
The restaurant was small but trendy, with red booths and checkered tile floors. The smell of sizzling beef and fresh fries made Cameron’s stomach growl.
They ordered at the counter—a double cheeseburger and curly fries for Cam, and a chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries for Christina—and found a booth by the window.
They chatted idly while eating, the conversation light until Christina mentioned a funny story about one of her friends fixing her car.
"Yeah, Ellie figured it out herself. Turns out it was just a loose wire or something. She didn’t even need to call her dad."
Cameron raised an eyebrow. "Wait, Ellie fixed her own car?"
Christina gave him a look. "Yes, Cam. Girls can use tools. It’s not witchcraft."
Cam laughed. "I mean, sure, but it’s kind of rare, right? Like, most girls don’t even know where the dipstick is."
Christina blinked. "Wow."
"What? It’s not an insult. It’s just—guys grow up around cars and fixing stuff. Girls grow up playing with makeup and dolls. It’s different."
"Cam, you realize how backwards that sounds, right?"
He shrugged. "Hey, I’m just saying. There are things guys are naturally better at and things girls are naturally better at. Like, I wouldn’t ask a dude for skincare tips."
"You are digging yourself a massive hole right now," Christina said, narrowing her eyes.
Cameron held up a hand. "I didn’t mean anything bad! It’s just how people are wired."
"So by your logic, I should be scared of jumper cables and in charge of applying moisturizer?"
"Okay, when you say it like that... it sounds kinda bad."
"Because it is bad."
Christina leaned back, clearly savoring the moment. "You’re lucky I’m forgiving. But I’m gonna need you to earn it."
He raised an eyebrow. "Earn it how?"
She grinned. "By doing one of five very feminine things with me. Full commitment. No backing out."
Cameron groaned. "This again?"
"Yep," she said, already counting on her fingers. "Pick your penance."
