The Decoy

"But Bishop VanGrew, this is preposterous!" cried Lord Haversham. "You can't seriously expect us to believe that the King would name a... a lowly lord of some hovel as King, do you?"

The bishop's eyes narrowed. "You would accuse me? The Cardinal Bishop—a man of God—of lying?" Through gritted teeth he seethed, "You would dare?" Apparently, Lord Haversham was not as big of a pompous fool as I had first perceived.

His cheeks flushed an ugly red, his mammoth jowls flapping as he shook his head. “I… I would never—“

“I thought not.” The Bishop turned back to me. “Now, Sire, if you will come with me, we have much to discuss. We must prepare for your coronation.” He reached out and took my elbow, pulling me through the parting crowd. Several curtsied, while others sniffed in scorn. Perhaps I should have objected to being manhandled or even insisted that everyone give me due respect. However, shock had me stumbling along beside the Bishop.

He pushed through the door to the left and entered the King’s chambers. I stared in awe, taking in the red velvet curtains and cushions adorning the high-back chairs.

Shutting the door, he smirked and called, “It is done.”

From behind the door, stepped a regal man—a man, unwounded, and very much still breathing. I dropped to one knee and bowed my head, “Sire? You are alive, but…”

“Rise, Sir Keravin. I hope you will forgive the ruse, but I have need of someone I can trust.”

Rising, I trembled when I suddenly remembered the royal cloak wrapped around my shoulders. I snatched it off and held it out to him. “Why would you trust me, Sire? What have I done to merit such a boon?”

The king shook his head, “For now I would like for you to keep that and as for trust…. Well, let’s just say that I wanted a man who had no ambition, a man who would not want to be king.”
