"Well, you got that right!" I blush at my loose tongue and bow again. "S-sire. As you said, I have never desired the throne. I'm actually quite bad at all these court affairs, in fact! What good could possibly come of making me king in your place?" My eyes go wide as a thought strikes me. "Please, Sire, don't let me get killed! The assassin...!"
The King chuckles. "Do not fear, Sir Keravin. There was no assassin." His voice grows momentarily pensive, the light going out of his eyes for a moment. "Not this time, at least."
"But... there could be an assassin?"
The King shook his head, gestured for me to take a seat, and began his explanation. "I have to go away for a time, without the nobles hounding my every step. Yes, you'll have to face the dangers that accompany being king --including the occasional assassin-- but you'll have my most loyal advisors to help and protect you. They've managed well enough with me so far. You have nothing to fear in their hands."
He waved Bishop VanGrew over. The old man came forward, handing the King a small folded piece of paper before moving to stand off to the side. The bishop still had a slight smile on his face.
The King unfolded the paper and, after reading it himself, handed it to me with a smile. "Read that, then tell me if you find this whole affair untenable."
So I read it.
Turns out, things were a lot worse than I thought.
