Chapter #2

Magical Mom

    by: Rita Author IconMail Icon
"Come to the house now, we need to talk," read the text from Pete's Mother. Doesn't sound good, Pete thought, worried that he might be in trouble. Although he couldn't recall doing anything wrong or at least not recently. His mother not usually being the strict type, she let most stuff slide. She only really got upset when Pete did something obviously wrong. Pete remembered how she blew up over him getting into a fight at school once. Pete got a lecture nearly ever day for a month after that. But he doubted anything like that was happening now. Unless she found the empty beer bottle in his room. Suddenly very worried, Pete sent his a quick confirmation text "Am I in trouble?"

"Not right now," she responded. A rush of relief flew over Pete. Not wanting the feel the wraith of his mother for his secret new drinking habits. But if I'm not in trouble, than why does she need to see me? Pete wondered as he picked up the pace towards his house.

"Mom, I'm back," Pete exclaimed as he entered the house "You wanted to talk or something?"

"Yes, come to my room, honey," Pete's mother echoed from upstairs. Pete shuddered, he hated being called that. As he walked upstairs, thoughts flooded his head with what his mother wanted. Was she going to talk to him about college for the millionth time? Doubtful, Peter thought he made himself pretty clear to his mother that he was wasn't sure what he wanted to do after high school. Was it about girls? His mother has mentioned concern over the lack of women in his life. Again, probably not true either, Peter having told his mom many times he's just not very interested in the girls at his school. Was it about the mysterious stranger? Peter stopped and wondered why he thought was a possibility. That was clearly just some bad prank from some weirdo from school. Peter kept walking and shook the preposterous idea out of his head. He reached his mother's bedroom door and knocked.

"Come in," His mother soprano voiced answered. Peter opened the door and was greeted with his smiling mother.

"Uh, hey," Peter said, "So, what's up?"

"Oh, Peter." She smiled, "The most amazing thing happened!"

"What happened mom?" Pete asked, growing concerned.

"Well, do you remember Cassandra?" Pete tried his best not to roll his eyes. Cassandra was this nut job his mother started to spend time with about two years ago. His mother met Cassandra at a book signing, after Cassandra got kicked out for claiming that the author was an alien and kept screaming at her to "Show your real face!". Pete's mother initially spent time with her out of sympathy, seeing that Cassandra didn't really have any friends. Pete thought this was very noble of his mother and was proud of her, at least at the time. As time went on, Pete's mom seemed to believe Cassandra's conspiracies and magic crap more and more. She even started to do some kind of rituals over at Cassandra's house recently.

"How could I forget Cassandra?" Pete sighed, "Last time I saw here she told me she painted her face so she wouldn't be recognized by goblins."

"You can make your jokes, Peter. But to this day, she hasn't been attacked by any goblins," She looked at Pete matter-of-factly.

         "You got me there, mom,"

"But that's besides the point," She said, as she picked up a rectangular box lying on her bed, "Look what she gave me," She opened the box to reveal an necklace and a ring. The necklace was simple, just a silver chain with a perfectly spherical sapphire hanging from it. The ring on the other hand, had golden bands twisting and intertwining to creating a small halo. In the center of the ring, was a perfectly spherical ruby. Above the set of jewelry, embroidered into the box itself in deep emerald letters "JOIN"

"Mom, what is this?" Pete asked, worried what Cassandra has told her this time.

"This, Peter, is a magical set of jewelry," She said with excitement, "If one person wears the necklace and another wears the ring, than they are both granted amazing powers"

"Oh come on, mom." Pete became very frustrated, "This is ridiculous, do you really believe this?"

"Of course I do," His mom's smile began to fade away, replaced with a frown, "Cassandra promised me it would work. She's my friend and she wouldn't lie to me. You know, I could have decided to share this magic with anyone in the house, but no, I chose you. I thought you would appreciate that."

"Well, I don't" Pete turned around, "I'm gonna go to my room. Go bother Emily with your magic bullshit,"

"Peter, please," His mom sniffled, Peter could hear the tears coming but chose to ignore it. He couldn't enable these bizarre fantasies. As he was walked out of the room, he noticed an opened letter on his mothers armoire. The words on the page were the same deep emerald as they were in the box, "Don't read that!" His mother yelled at him.

"Or what? I'll be cursed," He ignored his mother's orders and began to read the letter.

Jane
I know you feel your son no longer cares about you, but I have a strong feeling otherwise. You two just can't communicate and that problems stems from the both of you. If you don't do something quickly, you two might grow apart forever. Here is something to prevent that. Wear the necklace and tell Peter to wear the ring. You'll be closer than ever after that.
Cassandra

Pete put the letter back down and looked back at his mother. "Do you really feel that way?" He asked.

"We barely ever talk nowadays Peter. I mean, all you do is avoid me. You come home and you.." She was interrupted by a Pete giving her a hug.

"Mom, He said looking up at her, "I just like my space. It has nothing to do with you. I love you just like I always have."

         "Oh," She smiled, "Good,"

"I'm sorry I said all that stuff," He stepped back and sighed, "And if you really want, we can try out this necklace and ring thing."

"Really?" Her eyes brightened up, "You mean it?"

"Sure," Pete sighed, "I still don't think it'll work though."

"Just you wait and see young man," She laughed as she put on the necklace and handed Pete the ring.

"So, uh," Pete said nervously as he slipped on the ring, "What's it supposed to do,"

"I'm not sure," She responded, "Cassandra said I would understand when we wear them at the same time."

"Well we are wearing them at the same time, where's the magic?"

"Hmm...." She closed her eyes for a moment and her necklace began to glow bright blue. Oh shit, Pete thought as he looked down at his ring, which was glowing bright red. Very worried, Pete tried to take off the ring, but it wouldn't budge. It was like it was super glued to his finger. He looked at his mother and she still had her eyes closed. Pete ran up to her and began to shake her shoulders, "Mom!" He yelled at her, trying to wake her from her trance.

"I know the power," She opened her eyes and the necklace stopped glowing. Peter looked down at his ring and it had also stopped glowing. He looked back at his mother's face and she was smiling again. "Peter, you may not like this, but...
