Professor Jessica Hilton's phone buzzed in her jacket pocket as she stepped out of her car. She sighed, shaking her head as she walked up her short driveway to her front door. Her husband's car was missing from the driveway. Again. She had been concerned about Jack's drinking habits recently and this really wasn't giving her anxiety any relief.
Cracking open her front door, she stepped inside to hear her youngest, Heidi, screaming at her older sisters about something upstairs. Jessica rolled her eyes as she took off her bookbag and locked the door behind her, hearing the muffled screaming from one of the twins retorting back, probably Natalie. As Jessica removed her jacket and pulled out her phone, the screaming reached a full crescendo, all three trying to be the loudest. Jessica looked up at her ceiling warily, worried that if Maddy was getting involved too, its probably pretty bad up there. Letting out a sigh, she elected to read her phone notifications as the argument ensued upstairs.
This new iPhone was interesting enough, sure. Jessica was shocked she had held out so long on just her old 'dumb' phone instead of upgrading. Unfortunately, she really felt like she got more utility out of her laptop than any old pocket-rectangle could ever give her. The real agenda behind the phone had been to relate better to her students and see the world in a way they could relate to as opposed to her rapidly aging perspective.
She scrolled through her homepage, filled with so many icons. She honestly was still getting the hang of things like Facebook and Instagram, she had no clue what some of these apps even did. Heidi had been helpful in suggesting apps and giving her the essentials, but even still Jessica had been too afraid to open them.
As the shouting upstairs ceased and some rapid footsteps stomped all the way to the other side of the house and slammed a door, Professor Hilton let out a breath of relief. At least they could all cool off for a bit and they could watch a movie in an hour or something. She clicked open her academic app to see if any students had submitted assignments for the evening. Nope. A second tab could list any questions they might have for her. Again, nothing.
Leaning back on the kitchen table, she decided to try out a new app. Scrolling along her page, she saw many that she had only opened once and then never again. Candy Crush? Snapchat?
She stopped her scrolling and looked at one app in particular. A little gray box, unassuming and with no title. Maybe it was a glitch? Or a virus? Could phones even get viruses...? She debated her options.
