Maddie pulled her hand quickly away from her pants, breathing deeply. She looked anxiously at the door, waiting. A few seconds passed, but the door didn't open. She breathed a sigh of relief that her mother hadn't caught her feeling herself. That would've been awkward to explain. She was too nervous to even consider trying anything now.
Maddie, got to her feet, looking around her room. There was a binder on her desk that she kept her art in, and her clothes strewn around the room. She took a few steps towards the binder, opening it to reveal the art inside. Many of the drawings were the same, except there seemed to be a lot more drawings done in colored pencils now. She grabbed one and flipped it over.
Her heart sank, although part of her had expected something like this.
Where Maddie normally signed her name as David, it now showed Maddie. Checking the others revealed the same thing. Maddie closed the binder, seeing her name in white sharpie on one of the corners. She opened the textbook to the page that showed who it was checked out to.
She sighed, hardly surprised anymore as she noticed what was inside.
Maddie was the last name on the list of people, showing that it had been checked out, but the check in line was blank. She closed the book, and turned towards her door. She crept towards it, slowly opening it a crack, she peaked into the hall. Her parent's door was open a crack, light streaming out into the hallway. She could hear her mother moving around within the room, probably getting ready.
She stepped back into her room, closing the door behind her with a soft click. She could explore her room more and try to get a feel for who Maddie was, or she could explore her sibling's bedrooms to see if they had any recollection of a David. There was also the kitchen. She didn't know what she'd find there, but it might be worth a look.
