"To borrow a phrase from my human father, kill two birds with one arrow," said the half-elf. "One skillful enough to steal a valuable item from one such as yourself will be useful to locate the Staff of Light. In fact, I think I know who stole your chalice. You are familiar with the Softpaw clan, are you not?"
The Tree Mother groaned. "I know them well. I've had to punish more than a few. Always stealing something."
"They are known for being the best snatchers for a reason," said the half-elf. "But, at least they normally avoid stealing with malicious intent. This particular one I'm thinking of is actually a Cleric for a god of Trickery, the tabaxi known as Swift Grass Softpaw."
"Tabaxi?" you asked.
The half-elf looked at you. "There's a lot of races out there. Odds are you'll run into few of them. Tabaxi were created in the image of some cat goddess, who was known for outwitting her foes, alongside the Leonin, who were created in the image of a War God that looked like one of the bigger cats, like lions."
"Do you know where this Swift Grass is?" the Tree Mother asked.
The half-elf nodded. "She's been trying to join my group. To be fair, she has helped save some of my group's lives. She does have healing powers, as granted to her for serving the gods. If she's good enough to steal from you, I might just have to let her join.
The Tree Mother looked at him. "We'll see about that."
The half-elf chuckled. "That we will." He looked at you. "Coming?"
"Might as well," you said. "Um, what's your name?"
"Eric," the half-elf said. "I have a spare horse, if you're ready to ride."
"Let me get a few things, and I'll be ready," you said.
A while later, you were riding on a horse, provided by Eric.
"You mentioned that you had a group," you said.
"That's right," Eric said. "Got about a dozen members so far. Different races, classes, and of course, mixed gender."
"And you know Swift Grass, how?" you asked.
"Common enemies," said Eric. "Got tangled up in a coven of vampires a couple of years back. We worked together to wipe them out. Thought about letting her join then, only for her to steal all the valuable loot, and my coin pouch, and my shirt, and my pants."
Your eyes widened at this. "How did that one happen?"
"Let's just say that I wasn't wearing them," said Eric.
"Okay," you said, slowly. "Not going to ask how you were naked."
"Taking a bath," said Eric. "That's all I'm saying."
"She must of had quite the sight," you said.
Eric grinned. "She sure did."
"This group," you said. "Just what is your role in it?"
Eric chuckled. "Easy on to explain."
