I know Jake would want to see the shrink ray, so I text him. 'Hey! I've got something cool to show you. Can I come over?' A minute later he responds with a 'Come on Down' gif from The Price is Right. I pocket the device and head out to my backyard, going straight to the fence. I hop it and walk along the canal that snakes behind all the houses in our neighborhood.
A little while later, I reach the rope ladder, which hangs down from the treehouse in Jake's yard. I climb with ease, having done this many times since we became friends in fourth grade. Jake's little sister sits in the beanbag at the top. "Hello Dweeb"
"Hello Rachel," I say with a sigh as I try and get out the other side. She sticks up her legs and blocks the way. "What's the password?"
"I don't know...Pink Unicorns?" I try and push her legs out of the way, but she is strong for a thirteen-year-old girl.
"Nope."
"Move, or I will sit on your legs," I grin, pretending to sit down.
"No!" she giggles and kicks my butt. "Come here, and I will whisper it to you." I humor Rachel and lean towards her. She gets even closer so that our noses are practically touching. 'Bbbbuuuurrrrppp' Rachel burps right on my face. It smells like Dr. Pepper and Cheetos. She bursts out into laughter.
"Real classy," I tease as she lets me past and I head down the later which leads into Jake's backyard. I walk into his room. Jake is sitting on his bean bag, playing video games. "Sorry it took me so long, your sister was guarding the treehouse."
"Typical Rachel." Jake rolls his eyes and pauses the game. "So what did you want to show me?" I reach into my pocket and pull out the device. Jake raises an eyebrow. "What is it?"
"It's a shrink ray. I found it lying in the grass over behind one of the buildings at the business park. It actually works," I grin.
"You are pulling my leg," Jake says skeptically. "That is probably just some old fashioned remote. Or maybe it's a prop from some low budget sci-fi movie."
"No, I can prove it to you, stand up." I point the shrink ray at his bean bag and fire. It instantly dwindles in size until it is big as a hacky sack. Jake stares, rubbing his eyes. I return it to normal size and then show him that it can change how small the object gets.
"I can't believe this! It is so cool!" Jake says with a grin. "Just think of all the fun we can have with a shrink ray."
"I know, right! You know I have always liked the movie Honey We Shrunk Ourselves. I'm not sure if this is safe to use on humans, but it would be cool if it were," I state.
"Well, there is only one way to find out. I dare you to...
