Chapter #2

An odd looking remote

    by: Morphology Author IconMail Icon
As Josh and Jenn sat down to drink their ordered beverages, Josh started to put down the odd looking box that was left over from his recent collision. "So how was your final mid term?" She asked as she sat down right next to him. "I hope our study session helped you out with that class. I had Dr. Reynolds last semester and he has a tendency to use the same notes year after year, so it made it easier." She smiled as she opened her lid to start cooling down the beverage slightly so that she could be able to drink it.

Looking around the rustic looking room, Josh could see several other groups of students made their way here to unwind after their midterms. He turned to his girlfriend as she brought the cup up to her mouth and started to sip. "Yeah, it was a lot easier than I thought it would be, but I guess that some professors are like their students and want to keep it as easy as possible by saving the old exams and notes to reuse them." He took a moment to put his hand over hers in a loving manner. "I'm sure you did pretty well on your exams too. I mean, you tend to always do well on them. Are you still set on making your minor Women's studies?" Josh asked as he started to bring his hand over to the box and brought it over closer to where they were sitting.

"But of course, I mean, I am a woman after all and I feel that it would certainly go well with my Pre-Law major." She replied with a bit of pride in her voice. "Mom completed her Law degree with a Women's studies minor and she turned out all right. Besides what I wouldn't give for men to understand some of the hardships that women have to go through." She started to name a few of them off, but Josh seemed to be uninterested and started to open the mysterious box to see what was within. "And not to mention having to deal with a lower pay wage than everyone else just because we lack something in the pants. Wait whats in the box?" It seems that her curiosity of the mysterious box trumped her thoughts on societal misdeeds.

Opening the box, Josh could see an odd looking remote that had a small LED screen that was currently blank which was next to a small hole that usually means a microphone and only 10 slightly worn buttons some were able to read. 4 of the buttons looked to be arrow keys with a circular button that at the center that had several letters missing, but could be made out as 'Select'. Some of the other buttons seem to read 'Swap', 'Copy', 'Paste'. The other buttons didn't seem to be readable. "What the hell is this thing?" Josh wondered as he picked it up out of the box to get a better look at it. As he did, a hastily folded note fell from it.

Looking at it, Jen picked it up and started to read it over. As she started reading, she noticed the University's emblem at the top with 'Electrical Engineering and Quantum Physics Department' printed right below it. Written with some seemingly bad penmanship was some notes that Jen had a bit of a hard time to decipher. "From what I'm able to read here." She whispered as she got a little closer to her boyfriend. "It looks like we should be able to copy or swap different attributes between people." She stopped at reading this small portion.

"You've got to be shitting me." Josh exclaimed somewhat loudly as he looked around to see the room had been cleared out except for a small group of older women looking over at them with a bit of disgust for using such profane language. Mouthing sorry to them, Josh looked back over at his girlfriend who was still trying to read the chicken scratch that was written on the paper.

She didn't seem to pay Josh any attention as she continued to look over the paper to see what other secrets she could get out of it. "So it seems like everything that is changed with this remote changes reality." She whispered as Josh put the remote down to see if he could read the note as well. But the dim light reflecting off of the paper didn't make it easy. "It also says that any changes doesn't affect the clothing only to make them fit the new form." She continued to look it over for more information. "Copying traits can't be undone since the copied traits will override the other." Jen continued to strain her eyes in order to get more information but the bad penmanship and what seemed to be the pen running out of ink, didn't help any. She put the piece of paper down for a moment to let her eyes rest and Josh quickly picked it up to get a better look at it. As he did, Jen quietly grabbed the remote that was on the table to get a better look at it.

Josh looked over and read the small portion that Jen pointed out about the copy function overwrites the other trait. "This has got to be fake." He replied as he looked over at Jenn who had the remote pointed over at him. "What are you doing?" He asked chuckling and unable to believe that his level headed girlfriend was being sucked into this paranoia. A small flash enveloped them both causing Josh to look around to find the cause and couldn't find anything. He originally thought that a car had passed by the window with its brights on, but he couldn't see any cars going by and the cars in the parking lot didn't seem to have moved. "What happened?" He asked turning to Jen but found that he had to look up to see her.

Taking a moment to see everything around her, Jen was finally able to see again and found that she had to look down slightly to see Josh. "Oh my God!" She exclaimed as she brought her hand up to her mouth in disbelief. "I can't believe it worked. I've been small most of my life and I'm glad that I can finally be taller than my mom and sister for once." Josh could see the small tears that were starting to form in her eyes and he was a sucker for her.

"I just can't believe it worked." He said with a hint of disbelief in his voice as he stood up to get a better look at his body. Nothing seemed to be different except for his height. His arms and legs didn't look any different and looking at his torso, it also didn't look too different. It was almost like he had shrunk. Looking over at his girlfriend, who was also busy looking down at her body, she didn't look too different either. She was just really tall looking and almost a foot taller than what he currently. "That remote was real." He said under his breath as he sat back down at the table, but this time across from Jenn. "Do you think we should turn it in? I mean, we might be able to get a nice reward for turning it in."

Still sitting there, Jenn took a moment to think about what the right thing to do. Since she was younger, she tried to do the right thing. Being in the local Girl Scout troop, she tried to lead by example. However, since she started to go out with Josh, he tried to let her be selfish every once in a while. "I think we should keep it." She finally said after much thinking. "I mean, you said that I can think about myself every once in a while right?" Agreeing with what she said, Josh nodded his head.

"I don't mind you thinking about yourself, but I'm going to keep it at my house while we have it." He replied, thinking that would be the best action.

Hearing this, caused Jenn to bristle up slightly. "But I want to keep it over at my house. You have your sisters to worry about getting into your room and not to mention the kids of your Mom's boyfriend that come over." Josh let out a drawn out sigh, something he did when Jenn made a good point about something. "So how about we split it between our homes. I will keep it this week and then you."

"But I found it." Josh said, sounding almost childish about getting the wrong end of the deal.

Letting out a giggle, Jenn quickly covered her mouth trying not to make it seem that she was laughing at him. "Fine, you then me. So how about we try out some of the other features? Hmm?"

Josh was a little taken aback by this request. "But here?" He motioned his head around the seemingly empty room besides the group of moms that seemed like they were waiting for their kids to get out of school.

"Sure why not. I mean, they didn't flinch when you and I swapped our heights and it changes reality." She pointed out. "So how about it, do you want to try out the other functions?"
