Anne shivered. Her car had stopped smack in the middle of Nowheresville. Paul was waiting for her and there she was, in a stalled borrowed hatchback wondering if she should’ve taken a left instead. ‘Go right and you’ll never go wrong’ had never failed her before.
The fierce rain intimidated her but Anne knew that if she didn’t get back to the city before the worst part of the storm, she’d be sorry. Her lightweight car would get blown away along with the last shred of her credibility. Lifting a hand from the steering wheel, held the hair back from her forehead for a moment in an attempt to decide what to do.
Pulling her hair back into a rubber band, Anne sighed. Her father had taught her a few tricks, but she hoped they’d get the vehicle started. Buttoning her blouse the rest of the way up, she took a deep breath and opened the door into the rain.
Almost immediately she was pressed against the side of the car by the wind. “Boy, this is fun,” she said into the dark.
She managed to get the hood up and remain upright long enough to find her problem – a stuck accelerator spring, or that’s what she called the part. She toggled it and was just about to put the hood back down when she realized she wasn’t alone.
