Happy July New authors and readers! Welcome to WDC. I am happy to be your editor today and hope that you will find a home here. This newsletter is meant to share some pointers that may assist or inspire you on your journey through our space.
Today's topic is on reviewing, one of my favourite activities here.
A wise tip to remember when reviewing:
"Sending a review without having any expectations about its effect is good karma.
A gift with strings isn't a gift." from our wise one northernwrites "Invalid Item"

As authors we do like to read and WDC has a plethora of items of all sorts, to please every pallette! We learn a lot by reading and I take it a step further to say we also learn a lot from reviewing what we read.
Reviewing is one of the vital features here in our community and WDC support even gives incentive gift points for reviews of 250 letters/characters of content to show support and how important it is.
There are even review groups you can join if you like, each one with its own rules or expectations and All are fun to engage in depending on what you are looking for. You can also receive gift points for reviews and may earn Merit Badges at events. You will meet cool friends who also love reviewing and supporting authors. Most groups require you to affiliate and put a link or pretty group signature on your review to show you are happy to be a groupie!
There are other reviewing activities where you do not have to join a group as well:
One of our recent Quill Award winning ones is
Here we love to celebrate the WDC anniversaries by giving reviews...you know there are folks here who have been on since WDC's birthday back in 2000!
is another one where folks can review new members.
You can earn gift points and even earn a monthly merit badge if you fulfill the challenges!
You review as usual but add a link to your review that shows you review on behalf of the group. Everything is explained on the group pages.
Reviewing Notes and Links
I have looked around and see some new folks have not reviewed yet. Don't be shy or reluctant! Hey, authors like to have their work read, so why not leave a comment if you read it. Even a word of praise is welcome.
If you scroll our Review pages, you will see all kinds of review styles as we all develop what is comfortable for us. I learned much from reading reviews, especially those with longer content.
Every writer and reader here have different skill levels, experiences and interests and it is so cool that we can share what we know with each other in a spirit of helpfulness. Don't worry if you read something you think is stellar and can't find any suggestions for it. Give your honest reaction and thoughts. More experienced reviewers who perhaps, have more know how or experience in that particular genre, will find things that could be tweaked.
I was told by one writer that she likes to get even just a reader's perspective about how the characters feel or the story is understood. At the same time, she would like helpful critique from other writers who are more knowledgeable about techniques etc! Plus not everyone is up on all the grammar etc! No worries. You do not need to pick out every flaw if you notice many. Just give a general comment about what could be improved. I have often suggested to some young authors to check out a grammar program before posting more work.
Share what you know as a point of view, in a kind way. As authors we need to look at reviews as points of view as well...for all readers will not have the same skill or awareness. We learn to take what fits us and leave the rest, thankful for the reader's eyes.
A general rule I follow is to say hi, give a positive overall comment, what worked and then suggestions that pop up. I end with an encouraging vibe as well. A yummy sandwich! Honesty and sincerity count!
There are places to request reviews...the same ones you can choose to review from as well!
"Please Review"
"The Shameless "Plug" Page"
To find items in specific genres or types go to the Browse By Genre tab to find your interests.
I noticed some new folks who write interactives seeking reviews... it seems a bit of a challenge. So here is my suggestion. Go to the Browse by type tab, click on interactives, and check out other writers who share your interest! Maybe do some trades, or begin a little co-operative where you work together on this type of writing.
Below I have posted some helpful review items, if you are keen to get some ideas to expand your reviews.
Lots to learn. So many love to review here and guess what...like to share POV!
"On Giving Reviews" --detailed and worthy of putting on favourites for reference!
"The Art of Reviewing Poetry" --detailed for poetry reviews.
"Reviewing Poetry: Pronunciation"
"Guidelines To Great Reviewing"
"Invalid Item" --An oldie but a goodie. A review is a gift!

So, if you read, please review! Give it a go! Make an author's day! We can all use some kind attention during these stressful times. And you never know when the good...in the name of a review, comes back to you!
Have fun and don't sweat the small stuff...or the big stuff!
Thanks for reading my POV.
