Letter from the editor

If you are reading this, you have made it to 2021. Considering the year that we’ve had, I want to say congratulations, but that feels rather inappropriate. It has been a tough year, though. A year of lockdowns, and a lack of hugs and companionship, and a so-called “new normal”. It was a sad year, an upsetting year, a year of loss and concern and of the utterly weird – I still don’t know why some people opted to stockpile toilet paper. Now, here we are. It’s a new year. A year in which my country, England, has just been ordered back into national lockdown, but there is hope on the horizon.

It is unfortunate that as the clock takes us into a new year it doesn’t quite bring us the fresh start that we need. Life goes on, the same as before. Still, it feels different to have those twelve new months ahead of us. They are filled with potential. We can plant goals here and there, and sketch out our dreams. Even if there is no genuine change around us, we can change ourselves. Create a new me to go forward, into the new now. In 2021 especially, we can begin to think about after, and what that means for us, and for the world.

There will be an after. The planet, and humanity, have faced a lot of obstacles throughout the ages, and we’ve always made it through. A pandemic is a deeply unpleasant experience, but when we look at the past we can see that they do come to an end. This one will, too.

There are many things that I look forward to when this one ends. My family live in the Netherlands, and my sister and little niece were meant to come visit me last summer. Obviously, that couldn’t happen. As soon as it is safe to do so, I want to see them, and see my other family, because the events of last year have brought home how important it is to maintain a good connection with one’s loved ones. Also, I was unable to go ahead with my plans to move, but I definitely haven’t given up on my idea of a countryside cottage. And it’s the little things, like the reopening of the farmers’ market, and the return of live music, and not having to stay up until the middle of the night to book a supermarket delivery slot.

I don’t know about you, but the idea of after has made me think beyond the return of normality, into a potentially better future. Or, to be more exact, into how I can make the most of the coming years. I’d done some thinking in that direction anyway – hence the plans to move – but whenever I’ve thought about what I want to do with my life I’ve failed to find a solid answer. There is so much that interests me, yet little to nothing that I have a true passion for. There’s your explanation of why I am on my third university degree and still look at other subjects, thinking oh, I’d like to do that one next! It is difficult for me to settle, and to focus, and to find what truly makes me happy, but I need to. I know it’s a cliché to say that we only have a limited time on this planet, but we do, and it’s good to make the most of it.

It doesn’t help that I can be incredibly lazy, not in the least when it comes to my writing. I have added an embarrassingly small amount of items to my portfolio over the last years. An even smaller amount of them are actually any good. If I want to make people smile through my words, to make them laugh, to bring a bit of light to their day, I have to write those words. Create those happy moments. I have to apply myself rather than linger in the uneasy realm of endless procrastination. I have to believe that I have something to offer. Remind myself why I started to write in the first place. Why I joined Writing.Com and took those tentative first steps towards sharing my work with others. I have to dust off the projects and characters sat on my shelf and allow myself the mental space for new ones. I am a writer, even if it doesn’t feel like it right now. I will write again.

If you feel the same, about writing or anything else, please know that I am cheering you on. It is especially easy to forget who we are and to temporarily give up on our dreams when times are unsettled. Just, let us remember the after. Let us prepare for that moment and be ready to be our best selves when it comes. It hopefully won’t be long.
