The contests and activities on this site are constantly changing! Almost every day there is something new and exciting to view and participate in. The ideas are endless. Some succeed, some manage to get along, while others, unfortunately, are left behind and forgotten. My goal as your Contest & Activity newsletter editor is to provide each of you with the tools it takes to create a great success.

Recipe: Elimination Contests
Below is a "recipe" for making an elimination contest. Feel free to get creative with the recipe. Some of the best things come from expirementing with recipes. We wouldn't have chocolate chip cookies if someone hadn't decided to expirement with putting chocolate into sugar cookies, now would we?
Ingredients:
20,000+ GPs
A way for members to sign-up
Prompts for each round
A way for members to be eliminated
Lots and lots and lots of free time
Preparation Instructions:
The first thing to do is make a few decisions:
One: What kind of prompts will you have? Will you have poetry only with a different genre each round? Or will you encourage the participants to try something completely new each round?
Two: How will the elimination happen? Will members be paired together and the best from each pair moves on to the next round? Or will it be every member against every member? Will judges decide who's to be eliminated? Or will you let members vote via the user poll option?
What will the prizes be and how many? Will each member recieve a certain amount of gift points depending on which round they're eliminated in? Or will the prizes be reserved for those who make it to the very end?
Once you have made these decisions, clearly explain each of them in whatever item you choose to use as your main contest item. Be especially certain that the rules for entering the contest, entering each round, and the elimination process are easily understood. Include an explanation for any sign-up deadlines. Once, the item is set up, advertising is key to get members to sign up to participate.
After getting all your participants, introduce the first prompt. Be sure to be follow any and all deadlines. If you have the round ending at midnight, be on as close to midnight as possible to announce the end of the round and anything else you might wish. Keep on schedule but have fun with it!
Cooking Time:
One week per round is the usual, but feel free to change this up for a challenge! The length of the contest will vary depending on the number of participants. If you only have a certain amount of time, limit the number of participants allowed.
Reccomendations:
Set up a group item and add all the contest participants. This allows for easy communication for weekly announcements of prompts, eliminations, and any other important notes you might need to share.
If you're depending on Writing.Com members to vote to decide who is eliminated, encourage members to advertise the poll or survey form. Making signatures that link to the item could be provided for members to use in their forum posts and at the end of their entries.
If this is your first time organizing an elimination contest, keep it small, simple, and straightforward. An elimination contest is probably one of the most difficult activities to run on Writing.Com because of the amount of time and work it takes to run one. |
Due to the nature of elimination contests, the amount of active examples are very limited. I encourage each of you to check out the plug pages for any current contests. There are also a few older elimination contests for you to look at for ideas and inspiration:
