Contests & Activities Newsletter by Dawn

This time around we are talking a little about account anniversary events and ways to celebrate having an account. There are different options that the writer can do for their own day or things that other people can do for them. It is always fun to celebrate, especially big number years like 20 year anniversaries.

Letter from the editor

I have been on WDC 20 years as of July 1. That is a long long time. When I first joined, I was going to college in Utah working on my bachelor's degree (the first one) and had just started getting into fiction writing even though I had dappled in my younger years including terrible teen poetry. An account anniversary is much like a birthday since it celebrates the birth of your account here on WDC and it's fun to find different ways to celebrate. Contests and the variety of activity options are a great way to celebrate having a writing profile for however many years. While it could be fun to host a contest and maybe I'll bring back one of the ones that I run for July to celebrate, there are definitely some other options to consider for an anniversary event. Let's consider some options that can be promoted on the Activities plug page.

Raffles

The raffle can be a fun but somewhat simple option because you don't have to worry about getting lots of packages or prizes and it's something that can be done with a variety of time limits. They can be used to raise money for different events, even to help pay for memberships. Often the prize is a portion of the money raised, which also makes it easy because you don't have to use your own gift points for the prize but instead it gets raised from those buying the virtual tickets. However, other things could be offered as a prize including reviews. It all depends on what you want to put up as the prize package for those that win. You can also decide how much each ticket will cost. There is fun too because people can buy raffle tickets for others. You can use a forum as the setup if you have a membership that allows such though one could possibly use other options but that is the common one for a raffle activity.

Auctions

This is another option a little similar to the raffle in that it offers people the chance to get a prize but it's done in a different way and usually includes many different prizes. You can offer different prizes yourself like merit badges, review packages or images if you have the ability to make them. You can also open the event up early for package donations and other people can add to the options for people to offer bids in the hope of getting the prize. These definitely are fun with a variety of options that one can offer. You can set up a forum for easy access plus that gives a place for people to post bids.

Forums

Even a basic membership is allowed 2 forums. Granted, it's not many but that is a nice starting point if you're newer to the site and haven't had a chance to work up gift points with reviews and such. Upgraded accounts or above can have an unlimited amount of forums that fit within the item limits of each membership level. Definitely makes it seem worth at least having an upgraded account if going to be doing activities and contests. Aside from the already listed activities for anniversary events, they also have another useful purpose. They can be made into a signing location much like a big card. I have 2 on my account from many years ago that I will post in the section below for anyone wants to see. Other people created the forum for me and had people post messages before transferring the item (forum) to my account. Transfer does have a small fee but it's really not bad. This is a very touching options if you want to help someone celebrate their account anniversary in a surprising gift kind of way.

Reviews

This is something that anyone can do to help someone celebrate an account anniversary but there also is a review group dedicated to reviews during the month/day of the celebration. I do recommend, if doing reviews of accounts that are 10+ years old, check out the creation date on an item because some of us have many things our profiles. I have stuff from my first few years on the site, though some have been put into book items instead or removed. Still, I have some old stuff from 20 years of writing. I also understand anyone who might be intimidated by the size of some portfolios. Gifting reviews is a nice and simple way to help someone else celebrate an account anniversary because we all appreciate feedback, even if it's a really old story or poem. Just knowing someone took the time to read an item is often an appreciated experience.

When is your anniversary? What will you do to celebrate?

Editor's Picks

These first two are examples of what people have done for me in the past, creating forums to let others sign and write little notes wishing me well on an account anniversary They can even be used for different years for anyone that wants to add more messages. I am showing them, however, just as an example..

Ask & Answer

How do you celebrate the anniversary of when you joined WDC?

Last month, I discussed page designs for contests and such. This was a look at font and images that can be used to help create an appealing page for those that visit or might want to enter. Here is a comment sent for that newsletter:

Comment by Rick Dean - Dinosaur Author Icon:
When it comes to colors and fonts, a little bit goes a long way. Use them, no doubt. But if the page starts to look like someone vomited a bag of skittles on the screen, I'm probably just clicking elsewhere. Fonts are the same - and not just font size. Don't use Æ as a surrogate for AE unless you're writing a proper noun in a story set when that diphthong was actually in use. Ditto for íðöí₮. You look like the idiot, not the character. Less is more.
