Ah, the myth of the ninja. We’ve always been fascinated with those black-clad persons wielding awesome looking weapons with shifty-eyes, who run around in the dark (or in daylight) - with a speed that the human mind can sometimes not comprehend - saving the day or mostly causing havoc wherever they go. Ninjas are definitely highly-skilled individuals, who are given challenges/goals/duties that they perform diligently or not at all. It’s this dedication to their craft that leads me to today’s newsletter topic: |

WHAT KIND OF A WRITING.COM ARE YOU?
Once upon a time, there used to be a great activity hosted around here where members became ‘ninjas’ for a day or week. They were given set tasks to complete and invaded portfolios, leaving nothing but chaos (read as ‘good times’) in their wake. Although it’s not been run for a while, I’ll be using the ninja reference to describe the different types of contests/activities and how well they suit you.
Some of you might already know my love for anime, especially for the popular Japanese show/manga Naruto. If you’ve never heard of it, not to worry – a simple Google search is bound to bring up more results than you can even deal with. In Naruto’s world, ninjas are divided into skill levels – from lowest to highest, we have the Genin (usually students just graduating the academy), Chuunin (can lead small teams/squads on some missions, can also be teachers), Jounin (high level ninjas who go for the really dangerous missions, are leaders and in charge of team(s)), and the Hokage (the head honcho, usually in charge of the village).
For the benefit of this newsletter, your level does not reflect your writing skill, but rather the kind of contests/activities that best suit you. So without further ado, let’s delve into these groups a little more, shall we?
GENIN: You are the writer who wants things done now and done fast. You relish in activities or contests that give instant results. You enjoy doing quizzes, madlibs, wordsearches, crosswords (just as long as they don’t take forever), and especially writing contests that give you at least 24 hours to submit an entry. You also delve in contests that require you to write ‘X amount of words per day’ or ‘enter a blog/journal entry per day’. For all your seemingly short-attention span, you are quite diligent, and it takes a disciplined writer to accomplish these tasks on such short notice.
CHUUNIN: Although you’ve ‘graduated’ the Genin stage, you still enjoy the thrill of fast contests and activities. You’re more likely to engage in interactives, campfires or writing contests that give you at least 48 hours, a week or two weeks to complete the task. You’re likely involved with review challenges, where you’re required to review X amount of items in a given time frame. You do the job quickly, but you like to do it well. You’re also most likely to engage in activities that stretch your artistic talents. These are always quick, easy and fun to do with no fuss at all.
JOUNIN: With Genin and Chuunin levels under your belt, you’re becoming a ‘veteran’ of these things, aren’t you? You've been there and done that, and now you focus more on activities that require your utmost and thorough attention. You like to participate in contests that can run for at least a month. It gives you time to work on your item, and polish it before presenting it to the world. You participate in auctions and raffles, more for the thrill of seeing who can outlast you after such a long (or sometimes short) bidding war. You are quite selective with the contests you choose to participate in, and look for those that pique your interest before making the decision to join.
HOKAGE: By now, you’ve gone through all the stages and at this point, you’re just looking for something to stretch and challenge you further. You’re more likely to enter contests that give writers months to complete their entries. You hope to be published eventually (or even already published) and tend to seek contests that provide the opportunity to do so. You’ve long given up on the 1,000 word count story and have now progressed to NaNoWriMo levels per day! (okay, an exaggeration, but you get my point). Of course this doesn’t mean that you still don’t get a thrill participating in other levels mentioned, but you’re the deliberate one and once you enter a contest, you are in it for the long haul and work extremely hard to make it the best it can possibly be.
Do you see yourself fitting into any of the levels? Or do you think you’re a combination of two or more levels? Either way, it’s time to don your ninja gear and either stick to what you love best, or challenge yourself to become an Hokage someday. Whatever decision you make, WDC is definitely the best place to develop your skills.
