About This Newsletter

What is a mystery? It's like a puzzle. A reader has to discover the secret or riddle in order to solve it and find out who the criminal or enemy is. Clues are imperative, but should be puzzling. Make a reader have to think by using a strong plot that paints a picture in the reader's mind, yet leaves them guessing.*Smile*

*Star* What is your idea of a good mystery? Is it a cozy mystery with less action, a hard-boiled detective mystery, an amateur detective mystery, or one not mentioned here?

Letter from the editor

*Star* The topic for this weeks newsletter is mystery/comedy. I think this combination is one of the most difficult because a writer has to focus on both humor and realism. Good examples of this type of mystery are the Lethal Weapon series. Actors Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, both excellent detectives, not only piece together the crimes and criminals involved, but do so while adding a good laugh occasionally. The Frighteners is another example of a fine mystery and comedy mix. Michael J. Fox portrays a ghost detective with a past and present including mystery, drama, and comedy. Another great combination is Miss Congeniality, where actress Sandra Bullock enters a beauty contest. An undercover police woman who is more than a bit tomboyish, she is determined to find out who is attempting to slay the contestants. Then there is The Cowboy Way, where actors Kiefer Sutherland and Woody Harrelson are good old cowboys whose friend is murdered. Alienated by an incident from the past, the two cowboys unite to head to the city to find their friend and his daughter in a realistic, yet hilarious way. Also among the comedy/mystery combinations I enjoy are the Rush Hour series.

The writing of the story should have a beginning that instantly captures a readers attention and holds it until the end just like other mysteries. The characters are a bit harder to define being as they have to be believable, yet humorous as well. *Star*
