What is a mystery? It's like a puzzle. A reader has to discover the secret or riddle in order to solve it and find out who the criminal or enemy is. Clues are imperative, but should be puzzling. Make a reader have to think by using a strong plot that paints a picture in the reader's mind, yet leaves them guessing.
What is your idea of a good mystery? Is it a cozy mystery with less action, a hard-boiled detective mystery, an amateur detective mystery, or one not mentioned here? |

This weeks newsletter is a tribute to Patrick Swayze, who was an excellent actor, dancer, and singer. Born on August 18, 1952, he was the second child of Patricia Yvonne Helen, a choreographer, dance instructor, and dancer, and Jesse Wayne Swayze, an engineering draftsman. Patrick lived in the Oak Forest neighborhood until the age of twenty-seven, where he pursued multiple artistic and athletic skills, such as ice skating, classical ballet, and acting in school plays. Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in early 2008, he continued acting until 2009, when he became too ill to do so. Later the same year, the well known actor perished from the disease.
Patrick was best known for films like Dirty Dancing, Ghost, The Outsiders, Point Break, and Roadhouse. Were any of these movies mysteries? They most certainly were. Point Break revolved about surfers who were criminals, with Keanu Reeves portraying an undercover detective out to catch Swayze and the others. Then there is Ghost, a Patrick Swayze classic. It is a comedy/romance/mystery combination where Swayze is murdered by what is thought to be a thief, but turns out to be someone least expected. With the help of a comedic medium, played by Whoopi Goldberg, Patrick's ghost discovers who the killer is and tries to prevent him from murdering his loving survivor, played by Demi Moore. Ghost is an excellent example of the mystery combinations mentioned in previous newsletters in my opinion. Other Swayze favorites are Letters from a Killer, The Beast, Red Dawn, North and South, and Three Wishes.
**If you have a good mystery you would like read, post it here or email me. I just love a good mystery! **
