Letter from the editor

Promotion is a necessary evil for any author. You may want to stay home and simply keep writing, but if no one is out there representing you (and don't count on a publisher doing that for you) - well, you might just end up with a lot of great words and no readers.

For the weekend of the 11th and 12th of September, I sat with other authors at a local mall to promote our books. It was dubbed The Great Iowa Book Event; thirty-nine local writers participated. I think it was difficult to get some of them to buy our brand-new signed books next to a 'gently used' book sale, and the mall may not be the best place to try something like that anyway. Especially that mall - there is no book store located there. With the average sales between 4 and 6 books per author, we may or may not have gotten as much exposure as we would have liked. Any signing event gets some publicity for the author, whether at a bookstore or library or anywhere else.

Some other things to think about when expanding your promotional activities is to only do as much as you can keep up with. Sure, a blog is a good option to start writing where people can read about you and your projects, but if you don't update it at least once a week you might want to find something that takes less time for upkeep. (Blogspot and Wordpress are good options for a free blog outside of WDC.)

You can use your Writing.Com homepage as a promotional tool, too. There are other sites that cater specifically to readers and libraries (goodreads, librarything) and being active can increase your visibility for a forthcoming book.

Whatever you do to promote yourself as an author - make sure you get your name out there. There isn't just one way to get there. How you talk to potential readers can turn them onto your book and future writings, or turn them away forever. Always speak professionally and keep a positive attitude.

sarahreed I definitely agree that we should continue to learn and push ourselves to improve. One of the best ways to do this is by taking classes or participating in workshops. I have taken advantage of the educational groups right here on WdC and have learned a lot. Much thanks goes to the wonderful teachers and staff of "Invalid ItemOpen in new Window.! *Thumbsup*

Glad to hear it. Keep up the good work.

LJPC - the tortoise Author IconMail Icon Hi Storm -- great newsletter about the importance of feedback and incorporating it in your writing. That's why WDC is so great. Two people (Vampyr14 Author Icon and Airdale (Alex Lidell) Author Icon) in the YA novel workshop recently made the top 50 of Amazon's Breakthrough Novelist competition. Airdale is now in the top 3! I'm sure both will tell you how much good, in-depth reviews helped them achieve their success. Congrats to them, thanks for the NL, and GO REVIEWERS! *Thumbsup* - Laura

Let's hear it to more reviewing and more success!
