Turning Eleven
Next Monday I'll turn 11 - in WDC years anyway. WDC years are like dog years, only better, and in reverse!
Eleven years ago I was working on a writing project with a friend, and we were looking for a place to get some feedback on our work. I googled "writing," and then as now, Writing.Com appeared at the top of my search list. I joined the site on March 25, 2002, and never looked back.
The first thing I submitted to the site was not the item my friend and I were working on, but a comedy piece about losing my voice. I immediately started to get feedback on it from other members, and three days later I got a pretty ribbon for my work as the best entry in a comedy contest I hadn't entered. I thanked the person for the ribbon, and told her I hadn't entered any contests because I had no idea how - she said that she hadn't had many entries so had gone searching for new comedy items, found mine, laughed, and decided I was the winner. Ah, if only I could win more contests without even entering them. Like Publisher's Clearing House, or the Powerball Lottery when it gets up over $100 million!
A couple of weeks later I discovered "The Writer's Cramp" [13+] and got up the nerve to enter. Of course most of my entries were comedy items (even though the prompts didn't specify comedy, I couldn't help myself!), and I was delighted to win a few of the daily prizes, which totally hooked me. (Back then it was also a 24 hour contest, but with a 1000 GP prize - clearly inflation has effected the Cramp as now the daily prize is 10,000 GPs!) Soon after I was asked to be an occasional Cramp judge, and then a regular judge, and then a few years ago I took over as the host of the Cramp in my portfolio.
In between Cramp entries and Cramp judging, I also found time to have fun on various "Bad Poetry" contests around the site. Well written, beautiful poems have a place in the occasional "SLAM" poetry and other respectable contests on the site - horrible, despicable, laugh-out-loud poetry belongs in a Bad SLAM poetry contest, or over in "One Night in Margaritaville" [18+]. I laughed so hard I snorted (and peed a little!) participating in some of the bad poetry offerings around WDC, most recently "Invalid Item" where horrible poetry was more than waist deep.
Of course like many of you I've made good friends on the site - some I've never met, and some I was able to meet when I attended a WDC Convention many years ago. It was so nice to put names to faces, and especially to meet our fearless leaders, The StoryMaster and The StoryMistress - who are, quite frankly, two of the funniest people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. I also got to meet one of your other comedy newsletter editors, Robert Waltz who I cured of his aversion to margaritas by making a pitcher full of them, narrated by a poem, for the WDC Talent Contest - he LOVED them. And I am solely responsible for corrupting Diane , who was a nice, sweet, teetotaler before she met me and my Mai Tai's, who were in the room next to hers at the hotel.
It's hard to believe I've been here for 11 years (eek! I was in my early 40's when I joined), and I am looking forward to many more laughs to come in the next 11 years when, soon after, maybe I'll be eligible for the senior citizen discount membership. Wait, what do you mean there is no senior citizen discount membership?

Now for a few comments about my last newsletter "Comedy Newsletter (February 19, 2013)" about the universe being out to get me:
From Katya the Poet
Delightful newsletter. I'm sure the universe is back on your side, or on your backside, depending on how you look at it, or it looks at you.
I sure hope so, thanks Katya!
From Angry old git
Hello there Sophie I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your story. I marveled at being able to take off for a month in February, drive a thousand miles and still be in your own country albeit in a much warmer place. In Britain we mostly head off for a 'stay UK' break any time between April to October. The Weather loves to keep us guessing. You never quite know what to expect! It could be the remnant of an Atlantic Hurricane or an Arctic blast; sometimes on rare occasions we get really lucky and a heat wave all the way from the Sahara meanders along parking itself over us for a day or so... If we get really really lucky sometimes even for a week! Small Island lots of weather.
South Carolina sounds fine; just fine.
Enjoy your day
The angry old git
Thanks so much for your kind words, and your geographical information about Jolly Ole England! Even I still marvel how far we can drive and still be in the same country (well, technically anyway - I must admit there are some states in the US that are as foreign to me, or more, than any country).
From Creeper Of The Realm
Ah, I'm jealous! I love South Carolina.
I'm sure that co-worker is off your Christmas list. At least you guys made it there and made it safe! One day less isn't a bad thing. Better than going to Chicago at this time of year.
Excellent point - and yes, my co-worker was naughty for sure this year so only coal for his stocking!
From LJPC - the tortoise
Hi Sophy!
I don't think the universe is out to get you. I think it's just bored and looking for people to poke. I love your newsletters. They're so entertaining and well-written. Thanks for all the laughs!
~ Laura
Aww, thanks so much, I always appreciate your kind words!
From A*Monaing*Faith
Sum1's In Seattle 's poem "What I Did" got me thinking; has there been a dark comedy NL lately? I really like my "Cadaver Dog" poem from "Invalid Item" but it's a lot more twisted than I usually am....
also,"little island in a state park in southern SC, between Hilton Head and Charleston. " I LOVE Hilton Head and I miss Savannah! that is all....
Hmmm, dark comedy - I'm guessing if you have to ask there hasn't been one, lol. Not sure if I am the one to tackle that topic but would be willing to think about it .....
From Zheila
Hi Sophy
My name is Zheila. I read your "The Universe is Out to Get Me." I had days like yours. This is a very nice short story. I enjoyed reading it.
Sincerely,
Zheila
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it.
From Ralph
Hiya Sophy,
You are a fun read. I've seen a dorsal fin just off the back of the boat, then in Florida I spotted a dorsal fin when I was a little beyond where the waves were breaking.
Sophy, the feeling ... I could not get back into the ocean for two weeks! It was most likely dolphins ... but .... dun, dun, dun, dun...
RR
I love dolphins so much, but I hear you. If all I saw was a dorsal fin while I was out beyond the breaking waves, I'd be more than a little afraid to venture back out into the ocean myself! That's why I enjoy watching all fins from the safety of my comfy beach chair, lol.
From k-9cooper
This kind of thing happens to me and Mrs. cooper all the time. Hope you enjoyed the rest of your vacation. k-9cooper
I am very sorry for you and Mrs. cooper then, lol. We had a blast, thanks!
That's all for this month -- see you next time! And on behalf of the other regular Comedy Newsletter Editors, the King and Queen of Comedy - Robert Waltz and Ẃeβ࿚ẂỉԎḈĥmas - remember to WRITE AND LAUGH ON! Sophurky |
